I’m going to decorate my bedroom in a gamer's hunting-lodge theme. I’m sure that my girlfriend will love the sight of wall-mounted koopa heads and tanooki-suit rugs lining the floor. It’s a recipe for romance.

News Blips: First XCOM screens

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a “re-imagining” of the original game. Game Informer, the magazine that broke the story that a non-first-person-shooter XCOM was in the works at Civilization developer Firaxis, has released some new details about the strategy title. First, the game will allow switching between real-time and turn-based play. All of the combat is turn-based, while research, diplomacy, soldier recruiting, and more will be performed in the real-time, strategic view. Classic gameplay features such as permanent death for soldiers, fog of war, and line of sight will all be integral to the experience, which suggests that the complexity won't be diluted for the wider console audience. I should finally play the original games that I bought during a Steam sale, but I probably have plenty of time before either XCOM hits store shelves.

AT&T details the PlayStation Vita data plans. The telecommunications conglomerate is providing a two-tiered, no-contract system for potential Vita users. On the low end, for $14.99 a month, users will get 250MB of data. For $25, that cap is raised to 2GB. Overage charges weren’t established, but if it follows the trend of data-only devices set by Apple’s iPad, then AT&T will charge an extra $14.99 for every 250MB over the limit used on the cheaper tier and $10 for every gigabyte on the $25 plan. It all sounds like a terrible headache, but keep in mind that without a contract you can cancel at any time and then return whenever needed. [ShackNews]

The Call of Duty Elite mobile apps are just about ready. Elite didn’t have a smooth launch. Not only were the console portals and the website unusable, but the promised mobile app wasn’t even available for download. Starting tomorrow, that's about to change. Call of Duty fans using iOS devices will be able to check their stats and make changes to their in-game loadouts while sitting on the crapper at work. Meanwhile, Android users will have to wait until next week before the program reaches the Market.

Warner Bros. announces Mortal Kombat Komplete edition. “Komplete” is just another way of saying: “Here is the same game again, only now with all of the downloadable content included.” Consumers will get Freddie Kruger, Skarlet, and 15 skins all in one package. I’m just glad we aren’t still using cartridges, because Mortal Kombat Komplete Kartridge would probably offend more than a few people.
