EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Eduardo Moutinho

With BioWare's recent letter to its fan base regarding upcoming content for Mass Effect 3, I felt this was a great time to highlight Brian's heartfelt message to the developer.

Mass Effect

Dear BioWare,

You’ve had a tough couple of weeks. It’s understandable. For the most part, you're used to receiving critical acclaim for all you do. It just so happens you have a large part of the gaming community upset with you. Now it seems like you might be making the decision to go back and change the ending to your epic trilogy.

I’m not writing this letter to comment about the ending of Mass Effect 3, I'm just asking you to take a look at the backlash that George Lucas received for changing the ending of Return of the Jedi to show Hayden Christensen.

The reason I’m writing this is to say thank you. I've been an avid gamer my whole life. I started on the Atari 2600, played everything in the middle, and rock the current generation of consoles as well. I want to thank you because for the last two years or so my love for gaming waned and you brought it back.

I know some fan boys won’t like this comment very much, but the truth is, companies have been giving us the same whitewashed products for a while now. We do our best to persuade ourselves every year that these releases are really good and innovative. Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, Halo 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops (don’t get me started), The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. They are all good in their own right, but really, aren’t they the same games we've seen before?

The fact of the matter is that recent titles have not been much different, in any relevant way, from their predecessors. For the most part, they just added more stuff for us to do -- not that doing that stuff made any real difference in our overall experiences.

Mass Effect 3 made me truly excited. I would spend my workdays thinking about playing, and when I got got home and booted it up,  I enjoyed every minute. I could tell that your whole team generally put their love and soul into the game. So thank you. Mass Effect 3 truly brought back my love for gaming.

I understand that things are tough right now, but keep your head up.

Best,

Brian Washington

You have just earned a new follower. I feel that a lot of people don't realize exactly what you brought up, and you made a valid and personal point. Thank you for the good read!

Thanks, I wrote it in the middle of the night. Wish I had more time to flesh out the ideas.

I just finished my first play-through of Mass Effect 2 and have been avoiding all this news on the "horrible" ending, so thanks for the lack of spoilers.

Honestly, I feel the same way about the Mass Effect series. I've been playing games for the last few years and have not been able to finish them. I lose interest due to the sheer volume of games available, gameplay redundancy, and just plain old lack of time  I started Assassin’s Creed 2 and bought 3 (the first "3" with Ezio) with the hope to finish them, but I find myself bored to tears being more than halfway through AS2. Btw I'm lying; I did run through Dead Space 2 pretty fast, shit was awesome. Like a delicious TV dinner of a video game, succinct and hella filling. Unlike Mass Effect 2, which was a 4-course meal made by Mario Batali.

Mass Effect 2 was different...I played through it once in about a month and can’t wait to do it all over again, because I truly expect this play through to be different. Not many games (that I'm aware of) have this kind of pull now-a-days. Especially if you are a Husband, Father, Employee, or Employer; adult life does not allow you the hobby time that high school or extended adolescent college life did. Mass Effect 2 was so worth the time and I feel (emphasis on the temporary) that no matter the ending that Bioware selected, it’s sufficient, because it supports the message they wanted Mass Effect to embody. Beware, your choices matter pilgrim. From the minor to major, you better think before you press.

By the time I’m able to witness the controversial ME3 ending these conversations will be settled, squashed, forgotten, or still wholly despised by countless individuals. Hopefully I won’t be one of them, and my River Shepard’s journey will not be in vain.

Awesome opinion Brian.

Cheers!
