Pandora: The handheld Linux PC

A group of very clever British nerds got together to design an open-source handheld. The result is the Pandora -- a button-heavy mini computer that combines the best features from the DS, PSP, and PC in one hefty device.

Internet comedian Stuart Ashen takes a look at it in this lengthy but thorough video review.

The Pandora goes for $500 (USD) but it's more than just another emulation device. It can handle old PC games on top of the typical home console fare. If you're looking for a portable way to play your catalog of old programs, this definitely seems like a viable option. The price is steep, but ordering it right now means your model will be built by the creators themselves.

You can order a Pandora and check out the device's numerous applications here.

Does it get shipped in a bubble wrap envelope?  I'd be afraid to open the box.

Its gone up in price. About a year ago they were taking preorders and said it was 300 bucks. Its pretty sweet but I bought a Dingoo Digital a few years ago and it works. Nice to hear Pandora is still around and not vaporware.

I've been following the progress of the Pandora since the beginning, but have yet to convince myself to buy one -- as super-cool as it is, I just don't need another portable computing/gaming device. Maybe if I had a real job it'd be an easier sell.

That said, the Pandora is the device to get if you're a retro gamer or emulation enthusiast who wants to play on the move. (I say that as the editor of a major emulation website, not just as some random observer.)

The price is definitely the main obstacle here, but I agree. If I could swing paying that much for an emulation device I would. The presentation is fabulously slick, and far beyond other emulation systems.
