UPDATE: This post now contains both parts. Let me know what you think (of the show or the game) in the comments below!

Skyrim! An adventure so huge, it forced me to buy a strategy guide for the first time in many, many years. Press Pause Host Carlos Rodela and I discuss this epic role-playing game and whether we think it's worth spending half of our remaining years on earth playing.

Speaking of strategy books, listen in (on part one) to hear about some of the crazy numbers the Prima Games authors had to deal with when working on the Skyrim guide.

Oh man, that strategy guide is huge! I like how you used that coin to show how big it was. Lol.

So, how does the third-person perspective for combat compare to Dark Souls (or Demon's Souls)? That's the high-quality standard that I look for now.

Oh, don't even compare those two. The combat in Skyrim is nowhere near as good, and the third-person animations are ugly. It's really not about the visceral combat here, though...more about exploration, customization, etc.

Ah, bummer. I was hoping to see those systems cleaned up in Skyrim. When I heard about the stamina bar, I got a little excited for the possibility of interesting combat in an Elder Scrolls game.

It *is* better, with a blocking/staggering system, stamina concerns, power attacks, dual wielding, etc. But it's not great. :)

I still think strategy guides hold a stigma among many players even for a game this massive. "I want to do things for myself!"

Ha, I know. When I mentioned I bought a guide on Facebook, a lot of gamers gave me a hard time about that. But it's not like I want someone to walk me through each quest. It's just nice to know a lot of stuff you might've missed otherwise, like secret locations or items...or for me, I mainly want it to help me with all the enchating and alchemy subsystems.

Makes me pine for the days of EGM2/Expert Gamer guides. I would have loved to see that team try it.

Side note. What about Fallout: New Vegas? The whole moral thing wasn't as played up as in FO3. Or really should I say that the main factions you can work for don't worry about how good/evil you are, and more on the results you can give them to meet their goals.
