Skate Punk Perfected: The Soundtrack of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Rob Savillo

I enjoy games more when music isn't a mere afterthought, and Nick explains why the original Tony Hawk's soundtrack fits the bill perfectly. Although, I quibble with his generous use of punk rock for the bands listed; I would have liked to hear D.C.'s Government Issue and L.A.'s T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty).

The soundtracks of the Tony Hawk games run parallel with the series' gameplay -- every passing addition reaches a new level of excessiveness. Before you know it, you're Ben Franklin doing McTwists and listening to a 50-plus song tracklist that includes Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash.

Uhhh...

Now, when I think of skateboarding, three things come to mind: skateboards, Vans sneakers, and punk music. The public may have considered Mr. Sinatra and Mr. Cash rebels in their heydays, but their music doesn't fit in with the punk culture of today. That's the main problem with the soundtracks of later Tony Hawk games -- they have way too many music genres.

The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater soundtrack, though, is as simple as a three-power-chord progression. It consists of only 10 tracks, all of which fit the game's skater-punk style like a pair of skinny jeans. Here are four of my favorite tracks from the game.

"Superman" by Goldfinger

"Superman" has all the prerequisites for a typical skater song: power-chords, 4/4 timing, horns, and a ska vibe. Is it original? No. But it does make you want to ollie whatever's in front of you when you listen to it.

"Euro-Barge" by The Vandals

Want a punk song with a lil' more edge? OK, skip to "Euro-Barge." It sounds like the band kicked into warp drive when they recorded this song -- it's only one-minute and 54-seconds, and it's played fast. "Euro-barge" might be over quicker than the career of a skater who botched a 900, but with the lyric "I am the ambassador of kick your assador," how could you not dig it?

"Committed" by Unsane

Still want edgier punk? First, you must be a geometry teacher, because I've never seen someone so fond of edges. Second, listen to "Committed" by Unsane. This song is great for those who like a little hardcore and metal thrown in with their punk music. Unlike Goldfinger and The Vandals, Unsane does not make feel-good, lighthearted punk -- their music is stuff to rage to. I mean, the cover art of their self-titled LP (pictured right) features a decapitated man in a Members Only jacket. That's disgusting -- who actually wore Members Only jackets?

"Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" by Primus

"Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" isn't a punk song, but it's the tune I think of whenever Tony Hawk's Pro Skater comes up. Primus's grungy, hillbilly-carnival-ride sound sets this one apart from the rest of the songs on the Tony Hawk soundtrack, but it manages to fit in anyway. Maybe it's because -- like skateboarding culture -- Primus doesn't care about what you want. They do what they want to do, and you can either like it or go listen to old Seven Mary Three records.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater doesn't have the most diverse soundtrack; you could probably hear most of these songs at any Warped Tour between the years 1996 and 1999. And it doesn’t even have that many tracks. But that’s why it’s so great. The stripped-down tracklist of alternative and punk songs fits the game much better than the bloated soundtracks fit the newer Tony Hawk games. It’s simply alterna-punk perfection.

You know what soundtrack really got me going?  THPS2.  That was a great compilation that got me into the mood to pull wicked 1080s (because really, getting as high as I could on a half-pipe and spinning around really really fast was all I did with that game when it came out).  Might have to check out the first game and see how that did in comparison.

I'm a little surprised to see Unsane in a Tony Hawk game -- seems a little too underground for that. Also, I remember that Dead Kennedys's Police Truck is in one of them.

But I've always found the series's "punk" selections pretty lacking. I'm just much more into the late-70s/early-80s stuff from Crass records, SST, and Killed by Death.

Bryan: Yeah, my main goal in the Tony Hawk games was to see how many times I could spin before I landed. Screw all that other stuff. :)

Rob: I had never heard of Unsane until Tony Hawk, but they do seem a little underground for a video game. I hear they have a die-hard cult following.

And don't get me wrong -- these aren't my favorite bands. I would never, ever buy a Goldfinger album. But unlike you, I think these songs work perfectly in the context of the game. It just feels right.

For me, skater punk is more of the Revelation Records stuff like Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Judge, Chain of Strength, Shelter, Quicksand, and Inside Out. Although, I suppose the Epitaph bands appeal more widely, so it's probably a good choice.

Maybe I just haven't been exposed to enough skater-punk music. I will say, however, that some Bad Brains would have made this soundtrack much more radical.

Absolutely! Especially anything from the Black Dots release of the '79 Inner Ear session.

The Tony Hawk games have gotten me into numerous bands.  I recall discovering Rage Against the Machine from THPS2 and Flogging Molly from THPS4.

Jerry Was A Racecar Driver. that song is a Mother**** CLASSIC!

although Scrape is obviously the choice to go with Unsanee. I mean, look at the clip :D.

Great Article! The music was always one of my favorite things about Tony Hawk games until it got ridiculous. 2 has my favorite soundtrack because of it's variety in genres and because it has Millencolin. As a punk fan though, the first game is great.

Thank goodness THPS2X is backwards compatible with 360!

I liked the first THPS the most out of the series. The music was great, it made fun of product placement (see the stores in the Mall level) "With the exception of Mtn. Dew" had some great levels, and tight control. The game when it came to music seemed more underground then later versions. Like somebody who was really into the scene picked the tracks. It had a nice choice between really agressive punk to more popish ska.

My favorite songs in that game where...

Here and Now by The Ernies

Police Truck by Dead Kennedys

Jerry Was A Racecar Driver by Primus

Screamer/Nothing to me by Speedealer

Cyco Vision by Suicidal Tendancies

New Girl by The Suicide Machines

Euro Barge by The Vandals

Superman by Goldfinger

But this game basically got a ton of people in my area back into skateboarding. The game came out in September 1999, and by I'd by say March of 2000 most of the guys at school where skateboarding to school, and building halfpipes in their backyards. It was crazy to say the least.

Rob, I was so going to use that Unsane album cover picture in my pre-edited article, but I didn't know if it was too offensive. Now that I know it's cool, expect many more disgusting pictures in my articles!

It's fitting because you're directly referencing it in the text. Besides, we publish violent game screenshots all the time. I don't see this as any different. Plus, it's an awesome album cover.

Here's an amusing tidbit while I was editing this: When you originally wrote "debut," I was a little confused, since their first 7 inch doesn't depict a decapitation. Then I thought you meant their Sub Pop Singles Club release (which I almost put in the final, published article), but that didn't make sense, either. I can't make out a Members Only jacket! Then I realized you meant their first album release.

Haha, you're getting a little too music-fanatic on me -- I meant their full-length debut. I took the info from their Wikipedia page, and it didn't say anything about the releases you mentioned. Sorry for any confusion!

Don't sweat it. I was worried I'd get music nerdy, and looks like that happened anyway. Oops!

Dang, the first version had "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver." Man, what I'd give to play the first game. The sequel had good gameplay, but I'd give anything to skate to Primus. For some reason, funky riffs, rowdy guitar chords and loud drums just work well with skating.

And I really didn't know that the newest games include music by Johnny Cash. Gads, it even includes rap music from Brand Nubian and The D.O.C. That's scary. And I don't know why they chose Joy Division's song "Warsaw" above all their later songs. Weird.

"Warsaw" is one of my favorite Joy Division songs, but then again, I like their earlier material (when the band was known as Warsaw) better. Swing Kids (musicians who later formed Crimson Curse, Holy Molar, and The Locust) have an excellent cover of it, too.
