Horror Week 2011

Retro games have such dreadful box-art, but for today's Horror Week Puzzler, creepy cover illustrations are welcome. Inspect the disturbing snippets below and guess what titles they belong to.

Scary shit.

Need some hints? See below.

  1. I wouldn’t bother asking this lady for a cup of sugar.
  2. Every town has its secrets...
  3. Silver bullets do nothing. Besides, you don’t have a gun.
  4. This game suffers from a serious dissociative identity disorder...plus it sucks.
  5. Knee-deep in the dead.
  6. Use a mythical weapon called "Sting" to defeat a giant spider.
  7. I’m in love with an extraterrestrial.
  8. You won’t find any goblins or ghosts here. Well...maybe you will.
  9. Godzilla, King Kong, or Casey Anthony?

Check out the answers on page two.

One out of nine. You came up with some clever stumpers!

#1 is something I would have never thought about, based on the entire box art.

I mixed #3 with the previous game in the series. Those skeletons all look the same to me.

I knew that #5 was one of those games. I didn't get the right one, but I think I was close enough.

Who made #9? Someone could have designed that a little better...Is that even a character? Lol.

Which one did you get right?

Go ahead and give yourself 2 points for #3 and #5, because guessing the correct series totally counts.

Yeah...whoever made #9's art clearly didn't play the game first...or gave a shit.

Oh, I got #2. I had to be careful to get the right game in the series--the sequel had very similar art, but in a different color.

Thanks for the 4 points! :D

Ah, good call.

I think you mean 3 points (#2, #3, and #5). You cheating thing you. ;)

I missed 6 and 7. I got 8 because I happen to have the box near me, and I guessed 9.

Number 8 is one of those games I've always wanted to play but never seem to find time for. Do you like it?

I got my usual mediocre score. This time it was 4 of 9: Three correct series (#2, #3, #8), plus one spot-on guess (#4) which I remembered from the EGM ad :)

Number 4 was all over Nintendo Power during the late '80s as well. That game will always make me think of this Angry Video Game Nerd video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M_4Yqk65f8

2/9... #2 and #5.  Stumped again by the 8- and 16-bit stuff.  I'm too young for these things!  Although I'm pretty sure I've seen #1 more than once; wish I'd remembered it.  #6 didn't look like LotR to me, but that was still my guess.  How blatantly unoriginal!  And /shudder @ #4.

Number 4's box says "battle demons with Hyde's psycho-wave." Isn't that odd? I don't remember any actual monsters/demons in the Robert Louis Stevenson novel. Then again...I never read it.

They're probably metaphors.  Metaphorical demons and metaphorical psycho-waves.

6/9. Thought the last one was something else. Never played 6, and I like to pretend 7 didn't exist, as it's an inferior version of its predecessor.

I never played #6 either, or its sequel. There's a fun little project for us.
