21 Christmas-themed games to get you in the holiday spirit

Love it or hate it, Christmas time affects all forms of entertainment...including video games. From subtle references like a hidden, red stocking, to whole levels decorated with multi-colored lights and dancing elves, one can feel the influence of the holiday season in titles from every genre.

I went on a magical Internet adventure looking for 10 Christmas references in gaming, but I easily found 21. I'm sure I still missed some titles with holiday-related content, so feel free to share your findings in the comments section.

Weirdest trumpet I've ever seen.

Valve brings holiday cheer to Team Fortress 2 by celebrating Australian Christmas, adding new maps and items such as red mittens, icicle knives, and gift-wrapped baseball bats.

He's a mean one.

An enemy from Two Crude Dudes wears a purple Santa Claus suit and carries a bag full of bombs. This green-skinned troll just ruined Christmas. Wait...could he be the Grinch in disguise?

Fighting off gay rumors...in style.

Dressing up your hero/villain in Fable 3 is fun...especially when you have fuzzy Santa hats as downloadable content.

I can't breath in this costume, guys. Guys?

Your sackboy will always look fashionable at Christmas festivities thanks to the wide selection of downloadable costumes in Little Big Planet 2.

Time for Santa's dirt nap.

In Hitman: Blood Money, Agent 47 has to assassinate a drunk in a Santa Claus suit and use the disguise to infiltrate a Christmas party where his real target is. The mission is appropriately titled "You better watch out."

Needs more honeycomb ornaments.

Banjo-Kazooie's Freezeezy Peak is one giant, holiday-themed level full of snowmen, enormous Christmas trees, and family-sized presents.

The Rocketeer's part-time job.

One of the crazed earthlings in the original ToeJam & Earl is Papá Noel in a jet pack. The game's developers probably thought the idea of traveling in a flying sled pulled by magical quadruped mammals was ridiculous.

Aya looks like a ho, ho, ho.

The 3rd Birthday takes place on Christmas Eve, so a sexy Santa outfit for Aya Brea is very (tight) fitting.

The bigger the hands, the bigger the presents?

The Christmas equivalent in World of Warcraft is the Feast of Winter Veil, an end-of-the-year tradition where the citizens of Azeroth trade gifts, sing, dance, and get wasted on Greatfather Winter’s ale.

Bad Santa.

Rudy, the red-nosed Santa from Bully, likes to decorate his toilet with sparkly garbage. He can have my trash, but I'm not sitting on his lap.

You can stand under my umbrella. (ella, ella)

You can catch Saint Nick walking around the city of Yokosuka in Shenmue during the winter. I'm not sure what the deal with the umbrella is, though.

Follow Rudolph's glowing nose to page two for more Christmas fun.

One classic you missed is Christmas Lemmings. All the lemmings are dressed in Santa costumes, and the levels and music are Christmas themed.

The old Mac game Dark Castle has a Christmas-themed easter egg if you play on December 25.

Awesome additions, Richard! I totally forgot about Holiday Lemmings. I heard rumors that suicide rates increase dramatically during Christmas season, but that's not true. Lemmings kill themselves all year long.

I know about Dark Castle because the Angry Video Game Nerd reviewed it. That little Christmas tree seems so out of place.

Rudy has to be inspired by Billy Bob Thornton from Bad Santa. "What do you want kid, a snot rag?"

The Secret of Mana Santa is still creepy. I wonder how monsters ended up ruining his routine in the first place.

Man, I love all of Team Fortress 2's holiday-themed items. That's one of the reasons why I played the game. Maybe I should jump back online to join the holiday spirit...

You forgot to mention the mobile phone/tablet games. The holiday mask in Infinity Blade 1 is one of the best. Oh, and I also love all the holiday-themed items in Cut the Rope: Holiday Edition.
