I've played enough Nintendo games to recognize these sound effects anywhere. Check out Def Jam emcee Wax's music video for his latest track, "Coins," and see if you too can pick out what treasured series producer EOM sampled.
I'll give you a hint: I hear coin collecting, a tall man jumping, and the cries of a scaredy-cat ghost. Maybe that makes it too easy, but you should still give the track a spin -- err, click. Wax's tight delivery and clever, at times vulgar, wordplay are more than enough reasons to tune in.
I appreciate how he doesn't beat listeners over the head with video-game references or themes in this number. In fact, it's all a bit subtle, except for the title ("Coins") and aforementioned 8-bit audio garnish. As for the inspiration to include those as parts of the song? I'd wager that Wax and EOM got the idea during a "brainstorming" session one night while mixing a couple of cases of Bud Light with the Wii's Virtual Console.
Before you watch the homemade music video (as in, they filmed it in a backyard shed), keep in mind that it's definitely NSFW for language.
