In the 16-Bit ad wars, Sega played dirty while Nintendo took the high road. I scoured the Internet for hours trying to find a vicious smear campaign against the Genesis, but Super Nintendo commercials took on a weird and completely unconcerned tone. Except when it comes to Donkey Kong Country. Nintendo had a point to prove with that one.

1) Weird SNES Commercial

Confirmed: The SNES turns you into a robot.

2) F-Zero

I really don't want games to make me flat. Call me old-fashioned....

3) Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct isn't censored, but the word "cool" sure is.

4) Kirby Super Star

I'm noticing a theme emerging in these commercials.... Are you?

5) Gamers Have Low Aspirations

You know that poor image of gamers that we all fight? You can thank this series of Nintendo ads for it.

6) Game Genie

To find a Game Genie interesting, you must be a pizza-munching Encino man.

7) Super Mario Kart

I always think of Mario Kart when I hear cheesy car commercial voice filters....

8) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

You can't do a roundup of SNES commercials without this legendary Japanese ad.

9) Starwing (Star Fox)

The series we know as Star Fox only goes by this name in the U.S. In the U.K., it's Starwing. Can you guess who that actor is?

10) Royal Rumble

RIP Mr. Perfect.

12) Final Fantasy 6

If you knew nothing about Final Fantasy, would you buy FF6 after watching this?

13) Donkey Kong Country

Nintendo does have a point about never requiring ridiculous add-ons to run fancier-looking games. This means they win the ad war! Hurray!

14) Yoshi's Island

What does the Mr. Creosote have to do with Yoshi's Island?

15) Shaq Fu

What the hell did I just watch?

I don't really recall many of the game tv ads of the 90's. Not really sure, since I watched plenty of tv then.

But I do remember the "Stick it in your pocket" Gameboy Pocket ad, one that was really fast paced, and such.

I do a double take every time I hear someone say Super NES - here in Australia we called it the SNES (one syllable; no-one would sound out each letter or separate "Super" from the "NES" part) or the Super Nintendo. Yet it seems like "Super N. E. S." was the norm in America. I can't recall ever hearing it said that way until a few years ago.
