Sega celebrates (?) 32X anniversary with music CD

Sega is apparently releasing a 3-disc album compiling music from several games on its doomed Super 32X console add-on.

According to Andriasang, music on the album is recorded directly off of the 32X hardware, and includes tracks from Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, Stellar Assault, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Parasquad, and Metal Head. It's an odd selection in my estimation, since two other titles whose names are thrown about often whenever the mushroom cloud-shaped Mega Drive add-on comes up are often Kolibri and Knuckles Chaotix. But I won't pretend to understand the sorts of legal and emotional loopholes that had to be jumped through to get this thing created.

The fact that celebrating a system that lasted on gamers' radars barely 15 months, let alone years, makes this resemble celebrating the anniversary of a divorce with your estranged ex. Is it a cheeky reminder to the parties working on the upcoming Playstation Move and Project Natal that console add-ons have a spotty history, at best?

I bought a 32X at Toys R Us for $30 + a game of my choice solely for the DOOM port that was available. It only had two episodes, the resolution was extremely bad, the screen size was tiny, and the last boss wasn't even the Cyberdemon. Pretty soon after that we finally got a PC and I took a break from consoles until Final Fantasy VII and a non-Pentium PC drove me back.

It's also almost unconceivable how complicated that thing was to install or deal with. I also seem to recall that you couldn't play certain games on it. The Genesis version of Virtual Racing was incompatible or something?

I remember that thing and I remember playing some games on it at the Blockbuster that was around the corner from where I use to stay.I played something on it (think it was Sonic and Knuckles) and I thought it was pretty good at the time, but it dropped off the map after awhile. That seemed to be a continuing trend for Sega from that time forward.

I'm saddend how little people know about the 32X. I got one for Knuckles' Chaotix (still what I consider the best Sonic game ever, no matter how incorrect I am) but ended up really enjoying some of it's games (sadly, there weren't that many to choose from.)

Virtua Fighter for the 32X was awesome and the Star Wars was one of the first Star Wars games to actually make me feel like I was in the movie.

I will agree the Doom port was pretty pitiful, but the few gems on the system were totally worth all of the inconvience of attatching that behemoth and all of those extra cords.
