Spotlight: Dissecting Reviews, Developer Interviews, and Pleasing Curmudgeons

The best defense against winter chills is to wrap up warm and delve into the Bitmob Community Spotlight. Obviously!

Michael Edwards and Frank Anderson dissect their respective problems with reviews, and consider if scores and summaries are over-used and distracting. Michael also has and interview with Peter Lu, creator of the indie game Cave.

Alex Martin discusses the power of DLC with his look at Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4, and how people are still talking about the games a year after their initial release. Patrick Bonk also touches on Fallout, but he's more concerned with Washington D.C.'s recent bad luck in games such as Modern Warfare 2 and Tom Clancy's HAWX.

Finally, Jeffrey Sandlin puts the community to the test. Can you help him find a game that he'll love? Dude is picky as hell!

Zero out of Zero: the Scoreless Review
By Michael Edwards
When Michael isn't writing about gaming culture, he reviews sodas. After laying out precisely why he does and does not like a beverage, assigning a review score seems to undermine the initial effort of the project. Do arbitrary numbers keep people from reading reviews?

My 2009 Games of 2008
By Alex Martin
2008 saw tons of award-winning titles hit store shelves. The biggest games last year are still going strong towards the end of 2009, and will likely be viable well into 2010. Alex discusses Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Battlefield: Bad Company and why he's sticking with them.

Bad Day D.C. Or Gaming's Mad-On for the Capital
By Patrick Bonk
Patrick tracks a theme in recent games, from Fallout 3 to Modern Warfare 2 -- (semi-spoiler!) the virtual destruction of Washington D.C. Hey Patrick, better hurry up and visit!

Interview with Cave Developer Peter Lu
By Michael Edwards
Michael takes a break from dissecting review practices to interview Peter Lu, developer of indie darling Cave. Cave is one of the many entries in the 2010 Independent Games Festival, and you can probably guess the set-up: You play as a boy and girl exploring a dark cave. Read on to hear Lu's design influences (aside from caves, of course).

Do Reviews Need Summaries?
By Frank Anderson
To sum up: Frank can't stand so-called reviews that simply summarize without offering any real critique of their subjects. Where is the line between summarizing for explanation's sake and summarizing for a lack of anything else to say? In summation, 8 out of 10.

Can Bitmob Find the Right Game for Me?
By Jeffrey Sandlin
Jeffrey is unsatisfied. Nothing is truly grabbing him and enveloping him in the warm haze of a truly remarkable game experience, and it's not for lack of trying. So, he's challenged the Bitmob community to help him find a game in the $20 range that could bring back those happy feelings. Good luck -- he's already discarded everything I would have suggested.

Just chillin', tweetn', and watching the VGA'a and noticed I was part of the Spotlight! VGA's have been pretty good thus far, just waiting in that Reach reveal!

Thanks loads for the spotlight. That challenge I put up needs a bit of a kick in the butt to produce any actual results. It's hard to convince people that the idea is something more complex then just 'list a game you like that is under 20 bucks'

Re-writing that for the Best of 2009 thing. I just realised I got the years the wrong way round. A big belated thank you for the spotlight, Jasmine. But could you do me a favour and swap them around in the link?
