President Barack Obama (right) goes over edits with head speechwriter

to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 9, 2009. Photo courtesy The White House.

My favorite aspect of Bitmob is editing stories from the community for promotion to the front page. I would rather do that than write a piece myself -- after all, aren't community submissions at the heart of what we do at Bitmob?

I receive a number of questions on writing from Bitmob community members, and many of these queries deal with grammar and style. Next week, I'm going to go over five of the most common grammar and style issues we find in the posts we edit on the front page.

But this wouldn't be much of a Bitmob post if we didn't involve the community: In addition to asking the editors for their lists of common grammar and style issues, I'd like the community to mention what they might like to see in the post in the comments section. Note: I'm not fielding questions on story structure; I want to talk about topics such as comma use.

Deadline for questions is 9 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday Friday.

Well, in your opinion, are both commas used correctly in this sentence?

I enjoy a good semi colon; however, using them with 'however' can be confusing. Should I use a colon instead? Should Howevers be capitalized?

How should a semi colon NOT be used?

I've been told that the hyphen is almost impossible to misuse - is this true, and if not, when not?

Is it generally accepted to use a third-person plural pronoun for inanimate objects?

For example:  “I like socks because they keep my feet warm.”

Also, to avoid sexist language, is it best to use he or she, make the noun/pronoun plural, or just rewrite the sentence?

Examples:

“If a gamer wants to unlock all of Bioshock 2’s content, he or she will have to pay for it.”

“If gamers want to unlock all of Bioshock 2’s content, they will have to pay for it.”

“Gamers will have to pay to unlock all of Bioshock 2’s content.”

I want to second/emphasize Jazz's second question: when NOT to use a semicolon?

Is it BioShock or Bioshock? I prefer the former.

Also, I know corporations are considered individuals ("Capcom is hiring" rather than "Capcom are hiring") but when can we use "they" to describe a genderless entity? Should I just use "it"?

EX: "SNK is a shadow of their former self" vs "SNK is a shadow of its former self"

@Nick N: It is generally acceptable to use "they" as a singular pronoun -- ie. “If a gamer wants to unlock all of Bioshock 2’s content, they will have to pay for it.” As for which form is most appropriate, I'll leave it to Jason to explain.

Is it ever okay to not preserve parallel structure?

I'd like some clarification on when to use parentheses instead of an em-dash (and, to a lesser extent, vice-versa).

Please enlighten me on the proper usage of hyphens and parentheses.

@Jazz: You shouldn't use a semi-colon and consecutive conjunction; the semi-colon itself acts as the connective. Unless the word after the semi-colon is a proper noun—and as such, would be capitalised anyway—it should be exactly as if you'd just used a conjunction, so 'John' is still 'John', and 'game' is still 'game'.

@Richard @Sandy If you guys answer questions, I won't have anything left for my post!

I'll add my voice to those asking about parentheses:

What are the rules on parentheses at Bitmob? You seem to like dashes, but are there any circumstances where you'd prefer curly brackets? Also, what's so great about dashes?

I still read a ton of stories in the Mobfeed with passive voice. Maybe you could write up a small lesson on how to avoid writing passively.

Great questions, guys. These are the exact sort of things we've had internal discussions about!
