The Problem with PlayStation All-Stars

The open beta for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has been up for six days. Even though the game is still under beta, and this isn't the full game; I feel like there's a need to open up these cans of worms before it's too late.

1.) Balancing Issues

Save for a few characters in the Beta, the biggest violators come from General Radec (of Killzone fame) and Kratos. Radec's moves consist mostly from his weaponry, and I always find that most players migrate to the edges of the maps and proceed to cherry-pick the crap out of the scuffle in the middle. Kratos has the tendency to interrupt moves, and has that huge range with the same strategy as Radec. If anything, I think the stages need to get rid of the walls. Which leads to...

2.) Stage Scaling

Granted there's only two stages in the mix, I'm certainly not impressed with the set stages. The scaling of the stages are just too damn huge. (I'm playing on the Vita) If I'm not getting shot from across the stage, I'm struggling to find my character to make the journey over to the offender, and by that time they've racked up enough of their super meter to where I'm utterly useless. I feel as though the stages need to be a bit smaller. The characters models look great (even on the Vita) and I wish I could appreciate them more, if I didn't have to strain my eyes so hard.

3.) Heft

And I'm not talkin' 'bout Fat Princess. (heh.) Not only is it hard for me to tell where my character is on screen, it's harder to tell if I'm actually doing any damage. If the only way I can win is to mercilessly pummel my opponents into mush, I want it to be as satisfying as possible. Super Smash Brothers does this well. The higher the percentage, the more devastating it is to knock them out. What All-Stars might need to succeed is a sense of damage and feedback. My suggestion is to somehow incorporate the super meter in how devastating your normal attacks are. The higher the meter, the louder the hit.

Regardless, the game is still under Beta and what Sony is showing us is only a minor preview of the full game. I guess we'll have to find out when PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale releases on the PS3 and PSVita on November 20th.

I've only played the 4-character demo at BestBuy briefly so take my opinion with a grain of salt as well. It did feel like Kratos was more "obviously good" than the other characters, but at a beta stage it would be hard to tell if he was good because he's top tier or if he's good because he's the easiest to win with at a basic level like MVC3 Sentinel or Street Fighter X Tekken Hugo. In Smash Bros. terms I guess the equivalent would be Wolf in Brawl, who was strong early in the game's lifespan but dropped in rankings later on. I know the game was designed with advanced play in mind, but since I don't own a PS3 I haven't really kept track of the game.

It kind of makes me wonder whether or not the game could stand on its own at the competitive level.

The only thing it needs for it to be competitve is for people to want to play it that way. The big difference between this and Smash is that the developers actually want that to happen and has Sony's resources for patch support in case things do need to be tweaked, as well as for promotions.
