The headset that gives you superhearing and lets you cheat

PX5Let me make this clear: I don't actually want you to buy Turtle Beach's PX5 programmable, wireless headset. Heck, I didn't even want to write about it when its PR rep pitched me a demo. I can't help it -- whenever I see coverage of hardware peripherals in magazines or websites that don't specialize in them, I suspect that outlet's only creating a story because it got free product and wants to keep on getting free product. (For the record, no one sent me any for this article.)

So, a little while ago, Turtle Beach showed me the PX5, and one specific developer feature caught my attention: the ability to customize the headset to enhance or subdue sounds in specific ranges. This isn't just about turning up the bass or treble. Imagine, for example, making footsteps in multiplayer Call of Duty: Black Ops louder, so you can hear nearby enemies more clearly....

When I learned that specific customization was possible, I got a little worried. I already struggle to keep my kill/death ratio out of "embarrassing" range; now I have to worry about foes with superhearing as well? That's why I'd rather you people don't buy the PX5....

Ah well -- at least I can expose this stuff, so the next time you're getting owned in multiplayer, you can at least feel some slight comfort knowing the guy who downed you maybe possibly could be using one of these headsets.

Here are a few of the other ways the PX5 can enhance specific titles, straight from the developers at Turtle Beach. You can download the sound settings for various games, and they're working on a consumer tool to let you design presets that you can share with others as well.

Call of Duty: Black Ops -- Tune out distractions and boost the sound of footsteps to gain a competitive advantage in single and multiplayer games.

Bulletstorm -- Boost the sound of in-game dialog, so you can easily follow the story over the explosions and gunfire.

Gran Turismo 5 -- Use the PX5’s dual-pairing Bluetooth radio to mix your own driving music in with the game.

Forza Motorsport 3 -- Bring up the engine noise and really feel like you’re in the driver’s seat without going deaf every time there’s a...minor...collision.

Dragon Age 2 -- Tame the sounds of Kirkwall’s crowds and hear the conversation among your party members clearer than before, or bring up the sound of steel-on-steel crashing and put yourself in the middle of the battles.

Halo: Reach -- Make the PX5 become one with your suit, boosting the sound of suit powerups and recharges, gaining a tactical advantage and knowing exactly when it’s safe to run back into the fray.

Dead Space 2 -- Hear the world through the ears of a Necromorph and sound like one when you speak in multiplayer.

NASCAR The Game 2011 -- Turn down the engines and road noise to hear your spotter more clearly.

Homefront -- Crank up the sound of faraway grenades and limit the volume of nearby ones, so you can hear your enemies from far away and avoid blasting your ears with too-loud nearby explosions.

Major League Baseball 2K11 -- Turn down the sound of the crowd so you can really experience the noises of the game. Hear the crack of the bat, the dull thud of the ball in the catcher’s mitt, and the pounding of cleats down the baseline.

The Ear Force PX5 is available now for the PS3 and 360 for $249.95. You can learn more about it on the Turtle Beach website.

I couldn't agree more!

I use the Turtle Beach X11's (an earlier, wired version) and I have found I have a significant advantage over others online. In CoD, for instance, most people lay Claymore's behind them to prevent people sneaking up the rear...with the Turtle Beaches though, there's no need...you can just hear the footsteps! I found the same with Halo 3, back when that was popular...you could hear the Overshield and Active Camo spawning from accross the map and, in MLG games (where the weapons fall from the air) even weapons spawning!

That may seem slightly hypocritical, that I'd support such a thing by owning a pair, but I just bought them so I could still have my games up loud at night...the advantage was a bonus. Now, of course, you have no advantage...you're simply at a DIS-advantage without them.

Alex: cheater!!  ;)  (kidding, of course)

Ha! Come now ;)

Without wanting to turn this into a chat thread, just wanted to say how great it is that Bitmob seems to be going really strong...I haven't so much as looked at the site since way back when we did our Halo 2 night (ages, right?). Glad to see you're all well and that the community has grown since then :)

Aw, thanks, man. Appreciate the support! We're still young and growing and can use all the support we can get!

I don't use headphones of any kind. I already have terrible vision, I do not want to ruin my hearing as well. Which is why, year after year, my hearing has stayed the same (perfection). I can literally hear a pin drop from 3,000 miles away...Actually I can't...well maybe I can, I don't know. I hear a lot of pin drops, whose to say how far away they are!?

Daang. That's a lotta dunkets just for fancy super hearing powers. Don't think I'm the audience for that one. You could by a console for that price!

I just got these in the mail to review the other day and I love them! Expensive, but kind of worth the price. I'm stil considering saving up for them. May be the last headset I get for a long time.

Hmm, might look into that. Quick question. Back in the EGM days of the 90's what was the deal with the hardware reviews? Was it sales rep pitches, or what?

Christian: That good? Lemme know, because I'm thinking of getting them myself!

Randy: I don't remember, but if we did review generic things like headsets or third-party controllers, then probably, yeah, we reviewed them because we were sent them. We were never comprehensive about covering and comparing every single one, so it was more a matter of what was convenenient and easy to write up -- what we happen to have on our desks from the mail.

Dan: Yes, I think they're that good. It's an unfair adventage to those who don't have it in my opinion(not a bad thing). I've been using it with the Gears Beta and absolutely no one can sneak up on me now.

It's awesome!

Christian: Ha, exactly like I wrote in the article.

I want an unfair advantage!

Dan: Go for em! I'm pretty set on setting some money aside to get them. I have the X11's like Alex, and I loved those. After putting these one however, I realized that I could not use my old ones ever again.

What, you think I'm made of money here? :P  I'm afraid that's not in my budget right now, but we'll see later this year if Bitmob gets funded, so I can start paying myself!

This sounds pretty far out. I hope I never play any of you guys while you have PX5s on. I can just imagine all the pain and outrage I'd feel.

I really digg my PX21's, but If I were already paying $250, I would go astro instead. Although, hearing them may make a believer out of me.
