"Great article. I learned how to use the UDK in college level design classes, and now I'm playing Minecraft. The feeling you get creating environments in the UDK or Valve's Source Engine is very similar to the delight of "editing" the landscape of blocks in Minecraft. Thanks for pointing out that parallel!"

"Congratulations! This is the clearest, most enlightening essay I've read about this "issue." I've tried writing about it myself before, while I was attending art school a little over a year ago. I had issues with the word "art" myself, especially being in the thick of it. Eventually I would end up associating the word "art" with "bullshit." I guess I'm a bit of a disillusioned digital art major. I commend you for your "solution" as well. What a beautiful word."

"Oh Halo. I've followed the series since the first book came out, before the original Xbox was even on the shelves. I've obsessed about Halo in an entirely different way than you've described: I'm addicted to the story.

 

Each time a new Halo game or book comes out, I fall back into a deep pit of immersion in the narrative. If it's a new game, I feel obligated to go back to the original and play through all of the campaigns, just to refamiliarize myself with what's going on.  If it's a new book, I dig out my well-worn copy of Halo: The Fall of Reach, and I don't stop until I get to where I need to be to continue with the new addition to the Halo universe.  I sometimes even get caught up surfing Halopedia and reminiscing about the ARG's, especially I Love Bees.

 

September 14th is looming on the horizon... I've had it preordered for months and it will be shipping to work, meaning that I will have an entirely unproductive day thinking about tossing plasma grenades into gaggles of unsuspecting grunts.

 

Looks like I need to dig out those books again."

"The first game console I ever got, and the first game I played on it, was Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Now, I'm 22, graduated college, got a full-time job, and I'm wearing a Sonic t-shirt.

I personally hate nearly every one of the Sonic games that have come out since the Dreamcast died (long live Sonic Adventure), but I'm a Sonic fan for life."

"I just graduated Art School with an emphasis in Game Design, and I feel the same way you do. Trust me when I say that you are being way too hard on yourself; in fact, you've got a bit of a leg up on many people, starting your deep appreciation of games and their history so young.  I didn't realize that I wanted to do Game Design until my first year in college.  And that was late into the year.  I'm constantly playing catch-up, and I understand the feeling that you're being left behind.

"I think that having difficulty finishing games may be more widespread than you think--even among "gamers."  I consider myself a gamer (it would be hard not to, since my field of study in school was Game Design) and I have completed maybe 10% of the games I've ever played.  It's not that I couldn't, but that my interests are constantly pulled in several different directions.  There are a LOT of games out there, and many of them are "pretty good."  I find that it takes a really incredible game--an experience that can never be replicated in any other medium--to hold my interest long enough to beat it.  I suppose what I'm trying to say is "congratulations!"  You're record is probably better than mine so far!"

"Mount & Blade also has a sizeable community behind it, which means lots of user-created content is available. Much of it is crap just like any other heavily modded game (cough...Oblivion) but there are a few gems that really hit the spot."

"Winter always makes me nostalgic for Neverwinter Nights, but not just because of the title. After a long semester that always ended by tumbling into a cold, wet, dirty puddle of slush, my cousin and I would fall into our Neverwinter Nights phase. It's an online RPG (I wouldn't quite call it "Massively Multiplayer") that has a heavy focus on roleplaying, and so it would consume our lives for a short and sweet moment each year, though it sometimes extended dangerously into the spring semester. I think those month-long time periods were the reason why I have such fond memories; It never really got over-played to the point of boredom."
