Editor's note: It's a match made in game-nerd heaven! -Shoe

In the fall of last year, the 1UP community organized something called Homecoming Week. It was an attempt at bringing back old community members to participate in writing, drawing, and other such activities. That gave me an idea for an event for Bitmob that would help bring together the two communities.

Remember field day back in elementary school? Sometime in the spring, toward the end of the school year, all of the schools would get together and play a bunch of games. The Bitmob/1UP Field Week is the same idea, only the schools are websites, and the games are blog-like activities.

Starting on Monday, May 10th, I will be posting collections of all the activities going on at both sites, and 1UP community member extraordinaire Cody Winn will be doing the same over there. Anyone can run an activity if they'd like -- just let me know if you are interested, and we'll talk about which day would work best, etc. Then a post will go up on the front page every morning that spotlights everything else you can participate in. Activities can range from a writing-based exercise like the Writing Prompts that Michael Rousseau is well-known for doing, to a game-related competition. Get creative and figure out something fun to get people involved. All activities on both sites will be linked to in my daily posts here, as well as Cody's over on 1UP. So if you want to participate in something, just be sure to be registered on that particular site and follow that activities posting rules so as to not be overlooked.

I've already talked to several community members to make sure that there will be events taking place; some of them may even have prizes to reward. So, if you'd like to host an activity then get crackin'. You've got a week to let me know what you want to do so I know not to forget you in the morning summaries. You can contact me at bloodstains85 [at] gmail [dot] com if you have any questions. Let's make this thing a success so that the Bitmob and 1UP communities can all rally together and have fun.

I'm intrigued but I still don't "get" how this works.

@Daniel - It's just a big collection of activities for people to participate in. Just like Mike Rousseau's writing prompts, Jeff Grubb's High Score Challenges, Andrew's call-outs, or any other sort of event for the community to participate in. Anyone can email me and let me know an activity they'd like to do, and I'll write up spotlights of all the activities taking place every morning, including those on 1UP. Cody will do the same and hopefully we'll have a mass of people going on both sites and taking part in all of the fun!

Sounds like an excellent idea and I hope to have the time to participate! Props to you and Cody for taking the initiative.

Dang, blog-related games.  I wanted to see Dan Hsu running across a field with an egg on a spoon.

This does sound pretty cool.

@AJ - Sure! That'd be easy enough to do. Shoot me an email and we can talk which day would work best and other such details.

Sounds awesome. Can we circulate some watered-down, off-brand Kool Aid as well? And what about a t-shirt with everyone's name on it, arranged to look like '2010' from a distance? Hell yes.

Question: What exactly is "field day"? We never had that in the school systems I attended. Is it a Canadian thing?

@Jason - I am not sure if it was just Canada, but due to the horrible winters there is only about a 2 weeks of nice weather at the end of a school year before exams start. My high school would hold different events through the week that would pit grade 10 against grade 11, and so on...  There would be tug of war, foot races, and other silly games. Most kids, including myself, took it as an opportunity to skip the week, so this will actually be the first Field Week I participate in!

You never had a field day in school Jason?! Oh man. It isn't a Canadian thing, as I'm not Canadian. It was just a day toward the end of the school year where all the schools (usually elementary, but apparently Lance did it in high school as well) would get together and do outdoorsy type events. Tug of war, dodgeball, some sort of game with a giant parachute. Good times.

@Lance @Alex No, the only time we interacted with other schools was in competition.

We just had "bring your games to school day". People bought board games and Game Boys to school and we traded Pokey Mans. In high school it was "watch this video because I can't be bothered to teach you week".
