Because Silver Isn't Good Enough

I’ve been a fan of Resident Evil since we were driving our characters around, since the first eerie footsteps of the amphibious Hunters were first heard, since the all-powerful rocket launcher made life easy. I’ve loved this franchise since the beginning, enough to forgive its occasional miscues.

Resident Evil 6 Features Running, Jumping, Shooting Zombies

I’ve been tracking Resident Evil 6 since it was announced (and hoping my wife surprises me with it as a birthday gift) and like so many rabid fans, I did a happy little dance when I saw that a demo, courtesy of Siliconera, was coming this month. My euphoria was immediately shot down upon seeing that I would have to wait one more week to play it. Why? Because I’m not a gold member.

I’m sick and tired of being penalized for not paying fifty dollars a year. I have to balance a family that includes a total of four children; I’m lucky I can do any gaming at all. I paid more than three hundred dollars for the console, I pay the better part of a hundred dollars for a game, so why the hell am I being punished because I can’t afford a yearly membership for something others get for free on other consoles?!

There’s no reason whatsoever that the demo can’t be released simultaneously for silver members as it is for gold members. The fact that they’re doing so merely to encourage people to pay even more money is atrocious, and it makes me want to jump ship to PS3.

Still looking forward to the game, just tired of being treated like a second-class citizen because I can’t afford to be one of the cool kids.

Thanks for reading.

You should jump ship. Everything is brighter on the PS3 side. They don't gate imporant features behind pay walls on Sony's system. Want to play online with friends? Do it, no money needed. Want to download demos day and date? Do it, it isn't locked behind a pay wall. Want to watch Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, etc? Go for it, no need to plop down $60 a year. Sony is the place to go when you finally get tired of Microsoft's greed.

You know what the worst part about Xbox Live is in my opinion. It is that, after the most recent dashboard update, it has become a literal mess of advertisements, while all the good stuf has been buried under pages and pages and pages and pages of advertisements. Want to find some great games to play? Spend 5 minutes trying to find them, all because 6 pages of advertisements were added to block your progress. THAT is what your $60 is paying for. You are paying for the right to be advertised to.

On the PS3, not only isn't there a subscription required, and not only is the store and dashboard designed to be simple to navigate, but there isn't even 1% of the advertisements you'll find on Xbox Live. Although, you will be downgrading in some areas. Download speeds are noticeably slower on PSN. Where it might take someone with average download speeds 20 minutes to download the RE6 demo on Xbox Live, it will take twice that on PSN. Also, there is no cross game chat.

I don't personally have the download speed problems after I beefed up my speeds, but many still do. If you are willing to put up with that, you can't go wrong with Sony's console. Also, there are a literal crap ton of awesome exclusives you've presumably been missing out on, and many of them are super cheap nowadays. Like all 3 Uncharted games, both Infamous games, God of War 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, both Little Big Planet games, both Killzone games, all 3 Resistance games, Valkyria Chronicles, both incredibly Ratchet & Clank games plus the original trilogy. I could go on and on.

Just to be clear, I also own an Xbox 360 and I play it often. Microsoft has some good exclsuive, though not even 10% of the exclusives Sony has. I think it is worth owning all systems, since that is the only way you can guarantee your ability to see and play everything you want to play. Games are supposed to be about the fun. They are supposed to be welcoming. To me, it seems like Microsoft is doing everything in its power to turn people away. It seems like they are hell bent on alienating as many people as they can, and they do it because they know they can.

You are one person, a smart person who see's through Microsofts bullshit and has had enough. However, there are 10 more people for everyone like you and me who are willing to put up with the nonsense. Microsoft knows this, and they have no reason to change.

Ed, thank you very much for this well-thought-out and passionate reply. I swear to you, I'd been on the fence about PS3 for years now, what with thee security compromises, but after reading this, I believe I'm gonna see about getting a PS3. What most resounded about your argument was your comment about the new dashboard, something I didn't even think of until you said something. But you're absolutely right, and I can't stand it! I'd just gotten used to it. I remember when the new KoF demo came out. It wasn't on the front page; it was cluttered with cable advertisements. Instead I had to root through page after page in order to turn it up. You think the GAMES would be up front. Thank you again for posting this. You've changed my mind.

Microsoft has done everything in its power to make the 360 the worst console on the market. No mean feat, considering that the Wii goes through worse droughts than the Gamecube and the nicest way to describe Sony's management of the last six years is "comical." Having to wait on the XMB to load is pretty annoying, but it's worth it for a Netflix app that doesn't take 20 minutes to start.

Agreed. I didn't even notice until Ed said something, but I'm also really sick of getting ad after ad on my dashboard.

I also had to give up my Gold membership since I can barely take advantage of it. Unfortunately, this is the way things go... as long as there's people paying for it, there's no need to make it free.

I think the best weapon for your dire circumstances is good 'ol patiente. I mean, it's too bad that you can't try the demo, but eventually you'll get to play RE6 to the fullest, and no demo will spoil anything about that FIRST TRUE experience of the game.

True that, although sadly, the demo turned me off from the game. But at the end of the year, I'm trading in my 360 for a a PS3.
