BioWare Labels PS3 a "Key Platform"

Inspired by the enormous success of Dragon Age: Origins for the PS3, BioWare has expressed interest in developing games in-house for Sony's console in the future.

Mass Effect

At an interview with Joystiq, BioWare co-head Greg Zeschuk praised the PS3 as a "key platform," worthy of the game developer to craft any future PS3 games itself.

You know, I can't say anything about Mass Effect in that regard but you know, I can definitely say Dragon Age and other things we do will definitely be on PS3.

It was great going through the experience of making Dragon Age, getting familiar with and understanding the PS3. Again, every platform is different, but now I think we're at the position where future PS3 stuff will be really solid.

As much as BioWare loves Sony at the moment, it seems that love just isn't enough to squeeze out any further information on seeing the Mass Effect games for the PS3. Asked if the upcoming Mass Effect 2 would appear for the PS3 along with the PC and Xbox 360, Zeschuk was amusingly tight-lipped.

We're not saying anything about Mass Effect for PS3. I don't know anything about that! That's crazy talk. I don't know anything about that.

About time they learn PS3 is a good platform to do a game on.

I will admit, developing a game for the Playstation 3 does seem harder than say the Wii or Xbox 360, BUT when you do lead development on a PS3 it will show. I hope more studios release PS3 exclusive games to get the most out of the PS3 or at least do lead development on the stronger machine and port it over to the 360 (or Wii)

While I have been loving my PS3 this year, I have to say that I think Mass Effect 2 going to PS3 without a port of 1 first is a bad move. If there are any PS3 owners that wanted to play Mass Effect, I would tell you to buy a 360 and the first game, rather than have to jump into the ME universe in the middle of the story. Mass Effect is all about the character you create, and the decisions you make that form this character's personality. Not getting that experience and starting fresh would really mean that you are missing out on a huge part of ME. 360's are cheap. You can probably find one and a copy of ME for around $150 if you look hard.

I agree that although Mass Effect 1 had some issues, it is very much worth playing if you intend to give the sequel a whirl. If they want to put the sequel on PS3 I would really like to see Mass Effect 1 put on the PSN store as a 20-30$ downloadable. I don't know how much program kajiggering they might have to do, but it will probably sell enough to make it a worthwhile project.

Doesn't MS own, or partially own, the rights to Mass Effect?

It's "Joystiq", not "Joystik", btw. I would love to see one of Bioware's massively expansive RPGs built from the ground up just for the PS3. This is good news for Sony fans, and it gives Bioware the opportunity to make more money, and even more games!

Whoops, thanks for the heads-up Kevin. I wrote this at a late hour so I wasn't mindful of those tiny mistakes.
