Bitmob Studio Tours: Gnomon School of Visual Effects

You may have read about my tour of the Gnomon School of Visual Effects -- now you have a chance to see the place for yourself, thanks to our crack UK video crew.  Working with these guys was about as thrilling for me as shooting an actual film (not that I’d know what that’s like). We planned dolly shots, pans, and how to set up interviews with students and faculty. I had a blast with them.

Unfortunately, I had to wait to see the final product. Now that it’s here, I can say that I’m pleasantly surprised. I think our British video wizards have done justice to this school that I would love to attend more than anything...if only I had the talent to do so.

Perhaps one of you can watch this, get inspired to kick some artistic ass, and join this school, so I can live vicariously through you. Keep me updated.

Very cool to see what you guys saw. Did you want to steal some of those models to take home with you? They're incredible! Poor Pyramid Head's head fell off, though.

Dude, I can't tell you how difficult it was not to run out with one of those ODST helmets. I almost mentioned that struggle in my original article.

I can vouch. Gnomon is definitely not messing around. After my extensive search for "games" school I would say Gnomon is for sure in the top 3 of all the schools I researched. Number 1 if your looking to specialize in anything to do with 3D modeling and animation. The campus is actually an old paramount building.

There are ton of cool things going on at that place. They put on art shows that exhibit art from industry professionals almost every month or every month or so... One time it was Naughty Dog for example. The other thing they do that is different is the gnomon library - in which they collaborate with industry experts in respective artistic fields and make video tutorials which can be purchased digitally. I believe there are dvds of that stuff too.

The only reason I didn't go was because I couldn't get funding for the entry level track I needed because I already received funding while completing my BA.

If your good enough though and already have familiarity with 3D software you can get into the more advanced tracks.

I asked what their success rate is among graduates and they said close to 90%. That's fucking staggering compared to my colleges success rate.

If you can manage to get into a school like this, its reputation alone will guarantee you a job in these industries.

And the Gnomon campus is actually the old Technicolor studio lot. Pretty damn fitting, ain't it?

What are normal, average college-graduation rates like? I have no idea....

I don't remember what my college's rates where, but I do remember them telling me that the percent of freshmen who would actually graduate in 4 years was 7%. Granted that's only for those who get out in 4 years, but still.
