Canceled games and classics that deserve a second chance

EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Dan "Shoe" Hsu

I had completely forgotten about many of these titles until Dwayne brought them up here. I even met with Microsoft at one point years ago to negotiate a first-look cover story for the Marvel game!

Since a lot of games that developers work on get canceled, I've compiled a list of ones I want to see appear on curent-gen platforms (i.e., PS3, 360, and PC), starting with...

True Fantasy Live Online

Why this original Xbox game was canceled, I will never understand. The people at Microsoft Game Studios should get their heads out of their butts and release their own massively multiplayer game on the 360, seeing as how their main competitor, Sony, will have one out pretty soon (DC Universe Online). True Fantasy Live Online deserves a second chance at life; I'm sure I'm not the only gamer disappointed at this title being canceled. MGS and Level-5 (the developer) owe it to us to revive this game, even if it's subscription-based (much like Sony will do with DCUO).

Marvel Universe Online

Marvel Universe Online

I'm a fan of both Marvel and DC comics, and I feel this would be the perfect game to prove that the 360 can in fact support more than one MMO game (after all, the 360 did show it can handle the genre with Final Fantasy 11).

Starcraft: Ghost

Starcraft: Ghost

Even though I have only seen screenshots of this title, I would have probably enjoyed playing it had Blizzard continued working on it instead of scrapping it. Hopefully with Starcraft 2 doing so well and Diablo 3 on the horizon, Blizzard will reconsider, give this game another chance, and make it for PS3, 360, and PC.

Now, my list of classic games that deserve the next-gen treatment (next page)...

Cool list. I remember seeing a very playable and far-along version of Starcraft: Ghost back in the day. It wasn't that early in the dev process when it got canned!

Also: Hope you don't mind all the edits I made to your story. :)

It is too bad the Marvel MMO and True Fantasy Live Online were canceled they looked to be interesting. I am still waiting for Starcraft Ghost though and no in my mind it is still coming out. :)

Nice list! As for myself, I'm kind of bummed that that Pirates of the Caribbean game was cancelled. I thought it had real potential.

Keep the dream alive man! I carried a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 torch for nearly a decade, and look where we are now!

You'll never see Starcraft: Ghost. Blizzard's development style just doesn't fit with consoles. Hell, they took seven years to make Starcraft 2, so there's no way they'll risk developing a game for a platform that the manufacturer might discontinue before they finish.

Ikari Warriors has an awesome sequel on the NES, so I'd check that out if you can find a copy. And I believe I read somewhere that Nintendo will port Starfox 64 to the 3DS at some point.

I would also like to see another Manhunt. Although I never played the second one, I really enjoyed the original. One of Rockstar's best games.

I'd like to add X-Com: Genesis or The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge -- the former would have been Microprose's return to the classic UFO Defense formula with the X-Com series, while the latter was the original designers' (the Gollop Brothers) evolution of that formula, which Julian Gollop described as being similar to what we later saw in Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3. Also, the Aliens RPG that Obsidian was working on until Sega cancelled the project.

I'd love to see a new Road Rash, and Star Fox. As for canceled games, I'd like to see Starcraft Ghost, B.C., Shenmue 3,

There was a game for the O.G. xbox called B.C. I have been hopeing for a very long time that they would think about going back and maybe gettin ti back on the go. but sadly........my dreams are still dashed. it looked very good! i was truely captivated by it.

I followed the progress of Starcraft: Ghost with some interest... I always thought this particular character arc in the Starcraft universe would play very nicely on a gamepad.  It seemed to me it would have great story potential, and I was hoping it would be a blend of Splinter Cell (stealthy secret agent sneakery), Doom (squishy Zerg gotchas), with a dash of Blizzard magic dust adding texture and fun.  Imagine if it had a sort of Call of Duty/Borderlands control scheme with missions similar to the Chernobyl/sniper quest in Modern Warfare.  With nukes.  Lots of nukes.

Man I was disappointed when it got canned!

There is no doubt Bioware will make a Jade Empire sequel they're waiting for a good chance to surpirse us. I still have my copy of Manhunt!! Also i have Turrican for the SNES loll I would love to see a remake/sequel to Wario Woods. That was a really good puzzle game where Toad was the main, good stuff.

There's not a day that goes by that I don't wish that Marvel MMO and Starcraft Ghost were on their way.

Nice list of games.

I'd be happy to see the old Turrican team(mainly Manfred Trenz and Chris Huelsbeck) get back again to make a new addition to the classic Amiga series. The cancellation of Turrican 3D was a great injustice to the world, even worse is knowing that the original Amiga Turrican games have never been released in any digital distributors such as Virtual Console!

Thanks Dan. i thought long and hard about this list and figured figured i'd bring up these titles since they were in developement and were cancelled before they ever saw release which sucked.

One game i forgot to add to the list (but should have) was the long Forgotten Castlvania game that was in development for the dreamcast but got scrapped (and for those that don't remember there is video on youtube). i think that game was supposed to have a female belmont going after Dracula (not sure but i think Sonia belmont was her name) and was either the mother or or something of Simon belmont.

Also another game i was looking forward to was the Dirty Harry video game. being a fan of Clint Eastwood's movies the game looked sweet from the trailers/Screen shots i saw of it.

Anyhow...if i can think of any other canceled games i'll either edit my list or create a new one.
