Gamers Play World's Most Boring Game for Charity

Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors was a well-covered but regrettably unreleased Sega CD title. The most memorable element of the game is the real-time drive from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada. You can't stop, you can't pause, and you can't go any faster than 45 mph.

The trip takes eight hours -- one way. That's ridiculous, no one would ever.... What? People actually gather to play Desert Bus and finish a trip? Indeed they do.

For the third year in a row, the Desert Bus for Hope crew is playing the game in shifts in order to raise money for Child's Play -- a charity dedicated to providing entertainment and support for sick children in hospitals. They've been playing for just under three days now and have raised $45,193.23 in the process.

You can donate at the Desert Bus for Hope site and monitor their progress. If watching the minutes tick by isn't riveting, why not pour over the galleries of team and bus fan art?

Wow...um. Hmm. I'm glad it's for charity though, that's pretty cool! Maybe one day we'll get a HD remake?

You didn't mention the most devious part of the game: The bus pulls slightly to the right! So every 15 minutes or so, you have to tap on the d-pad to set it right...meaning you can't just tape down the accelerator and let it run.

To correct Brett, it's actually every 15 seconds that you need to tap left as the bus pulls slightly right. And if you fall of the side, the bus stops and you have to wait to be towed, which, again, is in real time.

That game is so sweet. I want to know how many people have scored a point on that game.

You forgot all the internet celebrity guests, call-ins, art and game prize auctions in the driver's room! In case anyone is wondering, they're nearly up to ten points already. TEN.

(Interesting) tidbit from their conversation with someone from Joystiq - they have a review build with a glitched day-night cycle which doesn't get light again after the first night.

Did I forget, or simply neglect to mention?

I figured it would be more rude to suggest neglect, than to imply that your memory was imperfect. All I know is that Ken Steacy is auctioning original art commissioned by Marvel and Lucas at this very moment. That, and ungooglably rare art done on a comic to promote Jell-O. Also: 12 points!
