Editor's Note: We've recently seen how video games can aid cancer researchers, but did you know gamers can do their part, too? Evan shows us how by signing up for Extra Life, a marathon gaming session that raises money for children's cancer research.
As an added bonus, Evan has promised to dedicate a Rock Band performance to each of us who donates. I've already requested a stunning rendition of Blue Öyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" with my donation -- and I'll double it if he brings the cowbell! What song will you make him sing? -Brett
On October 17, thousands of gamers worldwide will play video games for 24 hours for Sarcastic Gamer's Extra Life charity marathon to raise money for pediatric cancer research and treatment at Texas Children's Hospital. Last year the event raised over $120,000 for the hospital, and it looks like this year is going to be even more successful.
I am sharing this for a few reasons. First, it's a great cause. Second, it helps to break the stereotype of gamers as lazy, antisocial, and apathetic. And third, I am participating.
My "bonus" to those who donate is that I will dedicate a Rock Band vocal performance to them; the donor can pick the song. Last time I had to sing "Sabotage" and "Painkiller," and I probably never would have done either if it hadn't been for Extra Life -- and I mean that in a good way.
Extra Life was one of the best things I did last year. It was great knowing that while I was still just spending an entire Saturday sitting in my living room with a controller as usual, this time it actually meant something. Usually when I stay up all night playing games I feel a guilty thinking about all the other things I could have accomplished with that time; for Extra Life, the gaming itself is the accomplishment. It is a wonderful feeling.
So I know where I'll be on October 17, and I hope some of my fellow Bitmobbers will join me by donating or, better yet, signing up.
