Gratuitous Space Battles

I was reading Greg Ford’s “The Indie Scene: A to Z” column today, and noticed that he was missing a very interesting title for his “G” edition.  Positech Games’ Cliff Harris has an ace up his sleeve – Gratuitous Space Battles.

Positech is probably best known for its Kudos and Democracy games, which are sim-feature heavy titles.  Gratuitous Space Battles is shaping up to be a nice departure from those titles by not necessarily toning down the sim but turning up the action.

Earlier this week, Rock, Paper, Shotgun conducted an interview with Harris on the upcoming game.  Described by Harris himself:

It’s a bit of a hybrid game, it’s part ship design, part pre-battle planning, and part interactive cut-scene space battle viewer thing. Basically it’s like a big space battle simulator where you can go back to the start of the battle and re-jig things and try to correct for why your fleet got destroyed. In gameplay terms, it’s a sort of tower-defense game, but with moving spaceships you designed.

The Positech page for Gratuitous Space Battles describes the game as skipping past the base building and other delays common in strategy games and getting right to the action of massive space battles.

The game empowers players with the ability to build star fleets from modular components and issue engagement orders.  Gratuitous Space Battles will then play out like a tower-defense game where the player watches her fleet combat an AI or human player fleet, hoping for the best.

In the Rock, Paper, Shotgun interview, Harris describes the pains he took to find the right artist for the job, and it looks like his efforts paid off.  The ship designs look great and the animations and sound effects are a pleasure to the senses.  From the video and screen shots available, Gratuitous Space Battles will offer plenty of customization and ship design variety.

Right now the game is currently in beta, open only to those who pre-order.  If you enjoy massive space battles, this is definitely one you should check out.

This sounds like something I would spend way too much time on. Thank for the heads-up. I didn't even know this game was in the pipeline.

I've been checking out a discussion thread about this game and its website off and all this week. I've been wondering if I want to pre-order it to get into the open beta.

I'm tempted as well, Jason. Perhaps our fleets will get to meet in battle one day.

@Jay That sounds like a fine idea. I used to play Starfleet Command 2 and 3 online before the official servers were turned off; I know that fans have servers for SFC3, but I haven't signed on for some time. Since I've been exploring the game again, I really should.

But I should also spend more time with Sins of a Solar Empire as well, huh?

Jay, I think I would, too. I'm probably going to wait until the game is out, Jason; I'll want to hear RTS madman Tom Chick's (his "Rush, Boom, Turtle" column is a must read for strategy nerds) opinion first.

I do like how Gratuitous Space Battles will be making use of PBEM (play by email) for multiplayer, which means I might actually have time to get in some matches even with my busy schedule.

@Jason - I played the original Startfleet Command, but somehow I missed out on the sequels. From what I've been reading, Starfleet Command 3 fetches a premium price nowadays because production was limited due to a lawsuit between Activision and Viacom. The ebay prices are absolutely insane.

@Jay You are correct; my copy could fetch a nice price if I didn't care for it so much. But SFC2 is the better game; it's not as nice-looking and takes place in the original series' timeline, but it offers more control. SFC3 steamlined a lot of it, but it's set in the New Generation timeline.

@Rob Tom's one of my favorite writers in the enthusiast press. I enjoyed editing his work while at Ziff, and I enjoy reading his work now.
