Help Me Learn to Love Survival Horror Again

I have a history of despising survival horror games, but I really want to break my cycle of hating them.

In general, I've never had a huge problem with the horror genre. In fact, in the old days I actually loved all the cheap thrills in Resident Evil, especially when the game blasted intense orchestral music before the zombie dogs started killing me. I even liked the challenge of budgeting my bullets and my (marijuana?) herbs wisely.

However, I've always hated the aiming system. I always hate moving and turning my character really slowly, just so I could blast the hell out of the zombies in front of me. I'm pretty sure that the main character in "Scream" didn't move this slowly when she fought her boyfriend.

There's also a few survival other horror games that I love as well. I really loved killing raptors in the first "Dino Crisis," even though my stupid character still turned incredibly slowly. I would have bought the sequel if I wasn't so distracted by the Zelda games for the Nintendo 64.

Ever since the original trend of survival horror in the second half of 90s, I always wonder if I'm ever missing out on anything. I haven't quite felt the urge to play them again. I still haven't quite gotten used to the awful control schemes.

I guess I really started hating all survival horror games after Capcom released the Devil May Cry games. I felt like I had to adjust to this stupid new trend of intense action and loud, angry guitar music. Not to offend any fans, but for me, "Devil May Cry"  played like an absolutely frustrating version of the "Resident Evil" games. I still hate those last few levels of the first "Devil May Cry," which required me to rely on precise timing and the ability to dodge powerful attacks in areas with some atrocious camera angles.

Is there still hope for me as a former survival horror fan? I always wish I could find the original Resident Evil games, so I could listen to the awful dialogue of Barry again.

I don't mean to ask people to give me the websites to download emulators or anything. I'm just wondering if there are still inexpensive places where I could find the survival horror of the past. Heck, you could even recommend some juicy survival horror games of today.

I don't want to feel left out, just because I didn't even finish the original Resident Evil games and whatnot.

I've only played a few of them, but I would definitely recommend Resident Evil 4 and Eternal Darkness.

You know what? I think that's a good place to start off. I remember that I was really disappointed with Resident Evil. Some parts scared the heck out of me, but it felt very cheesy. The only thing I remember about that game was the line where Barry said, "You almost got turned into a Jill sandwich!"

It was all really funny, but it wasn't very memorable at all. Sometimes it's a good idea not to look back at the good old days, because sometimes they weren't that good to begin with.
