We all know what kinds of games we enjoy, right? Some of us enjoy one genre over another, that's just the way it is. Some people like fish, some people hate it. But, there are some things you dislike for a long time but grow to favor them more and more over time. In my case, I've always been more poised towards the shooter crowd, you know "bang bang I shoot you, you fall down". And I've always liked RTS' but never seemed to really get behind one competitively speaking, more so just for single player fun versus bots and the like.
But recently I purchased StarCraft II, and I realized how much more satisfying it is for me personally to decimate my opponent with a massive army, to be able to micro and macro at the same time. There's just so much more to a game of StarCraft than a casual game of CoD or Halo, for me at least. I love both Halo and StarCraft, sure, but playing StarCraft just feels so much more structured and rewarding for me, not rewarding as in killstreak rewarding, rewarding as in I won because of better judgement and quick actions, not camping for 30 minutes and throwing grenades everywhere. I think RTS', from a 1V1 standpoint outclass any shooter by leaps and bounds in terms of actual skill, although team based modes can differ depending on which game you're playing.
Think about it, how an average game of StarCraft stacks up to an average Halo match, let's see.
In Halo you get a bunch of dicks in your room screaming profanity almost the WHOLE duration of the match, and asking "who else is high?" The winning team is ultimately decided by who controls the better weapons, communication, sometimes a large amount of luck, and competancy in general of your T-bag happy band of teammates.
In StarCraft depending on whether you go into a 1v1, FFA, 2V2, or whatever it's usually consistently the same during the run of the match. People are almost always polite, and for a team game communication is of course key for deciding strategy, luck plays a much lesser role than in a run and gun game, and more often than not you'll be going into team matches with people you personally know, not swear happy pre-teens, and racist's who love talking about your mother.
Not that there aren't egotistical dicks that play StarCraft, or extremely well-mannered players in Halo. I'm just saying in general, people I play in StarCraft versus people I play in Halo. the StarCraft crowd generally has a high level of sportsmanship and competitive spirit, while most FPS' I've ever played are heavily populated with sore losers that are ready to demean themselves in order to take moronic potshots at their fellow community members, in the name of being 1337 or getting laid or something super cool like that.
I don't know, StarCraft just fits so much better with me. It's super complex and competitive, and you get to play against actual human beings that can live with losing a match without cursing the planet to the apocalypse and vowing to rape everyone's mother.
I still love FPS' but I don't like having to mute just about everyone I come into contact with just to enjoy my session.
But how about you guys, is it just me or are FPS' overpopulated with idiots, while RTS' are surrounded with sportsmanship and intelligence?
