Does the Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer make California look bad?

EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Sam Barsanti

I may live in the Midwest, but I've seen Escape from L.A. and it makes California look like a pretty horrible place. Although, it is a pretty horrible movie...so maybe I should trust Michael over Kurt Russell on this one....

Rockstar has just released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5, and wouldn’t you know it, the setting just happens to be a fictional version of my home state of California (known as “San Andreas”).

This made me rather excited. Finally, a location in a game that I can really relate to! Still, something odd struck me when I watched the trailer's depiction of the sunny atmosphere of California San Andreas and its major cities.

Are we really that dirty and poor?

Now, I know that Liberty City had its issues and Vice City was not something to brag about, but neither of them seemed quite on par with how the trailer depicted life in San Andreas. The poor flooded the streets, there was construction everywhere, and then there was the trash. In almost any shot where you see a sidewalk or street there was trash. Even the beaches had trash!

I have lived in California my entire life and yeah, I understand that it's kind of dirty. Lots of places have these issues. I just find it funny that Rockstar decided to wait for this game to finally show off their garbage-rendering skills. It’s as if someone said during the making of the last game, "Hey let's make the setting a parody of California!" and someone replied, "No way bro, we don't have the graphical technology to show how fucking dirty that state is!"

Granted, the people developing this game probably have no prejudice against my Golden State. It just feels weird that of all the locations they could’ve used when they decided to focus on these types of details, they chose mine.

The images in the trailer could have been taken out of context, of course. Maybe the game's story involves people dealing with these problems. Economic issues have plagued the real California ever since the great Terminator spent a bunch of money that he didn’t have. Maybe that has something to do with the developers’s view of the state? I guess we'll find out once GTA5 is released.

For now, I just have to sit back and let people outside of California think we are the most dirty, poor, and ugly state to ever grace the GTA series.

I didn't notice trash in every shot, but I might have to go back and rewatch the trailer. Homelessness is definitely prevalent in CA, though (I'm also a resident!) and I wonder if they'll be tackling all of the foreclosures in this game that we've seen recently. The GTA series has always been a critique of modern society, so I'm curious to see what R* does with this one.

I did notice in the shots of mountains or nice houses you couldn't really see any traces of trash. But I really do hope that the issues concerning the economy are big story points. When GTA4 was released our economy was in tiptop shape or anything and they still never showed details that are present in this trailer. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. On the plus side all those details do make the game look awesome.

It has a lot of trash for sure, but it's still hell of a lot cleaner than Fallout 3. Granted, that game had to do with a nuclear apocalypse. I appreciate the bright, sunny environment though. It's a little more relatable than a demolished Washigton D.C. capital.

Yeah but instead of mutants from fallout we get bums in GTA. I'd rather have mutants.

So true. Oh so true. :P

I think it looks really cozy and sunny.  I love it.

It's better than the actual L.A. Lol. I don't have to worry about heat waves or "flash floods."

It's not as dirty as Deus Ex: Human Revolution's futuristic Detroit or Shanghai. In HR, there was garbage all over the ground (because no one seemed to be able to use any of the many garbage cans around the city), and garbage bags were piled high. Hell, there was so much garbage in the streets that cars couldn't drive on them.

I just think it's a realistic look at a modern American city. Our cities are for the most part pretty dirty and there are plenty of homeless folk.

This I can see. Rockstar is always willing to attack the issues of America head on, its just funny to this problem address in that game that centers on California. Liberty City was not the ideal place to live either. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would wanna live in that city lol

I don't think it makes California look bad, but it hits close to home given the current problems this state has.

I don't think the trailer makes L.A. look bad or overly dirty. At any rate, take a trip down to East Downtown, Pico-Union, Angeleno Heights, East Hollywood, Bell, and a lot of places in between. LA can be pretty filthy and abject in its poverty.

They forget to include Little Tokyo. That's still the cleanest part of downtown, in my opinion. Plus, my church is there...next to skid row...

Well anyhow, parts of it are clean. A lot of it is pretty filthy.

Downtown has its moment, but it can also be very dirty lol

Somehow, I don't think we're seeing the same trailer. That stuff isn't nearly as prevalent in it as the article makes it seem to out to be. Frankly, it doesn't make Cali look any worse than most of what I see of it in the news. GTA-ness of it aside, it might actually make it look better.

I suppose it's the upgrade to the engine that makes the game look so much more realistic than previous titles. This game has so much more detail to it that really points out the economic issues with the city that this series has never explored before. These upgrades may not be an attack on LA, it is prevalent as a new graphical addition to the series.

Yeah and bear in mind, considering the typical subject matter and characters in GTA, I'm not sure if you're supposed to want to live in the world's Rockstar creates. Well at least in the pockets of those cities Rockstar let's us explore. GTA wouldn't be GTA if it were all just Brentwood and Orange Co. The grime is part of what makes Liberty City and will make Los Santos work. The criminal underworld isn't all mansions and caged tigers.

As a life-long Californian who has been up and down the entire state, I can honestly say that you can't really generalize California as a whole. Parts of it are dirty while other parts are very clean. This applies to any given city as well. Is anyone familiar with Napa, or "wine country" as we're commonly known? We're depicted as a place with a sea of vineyards. While that's true for upvalley, the actual town of Napa is far from that image. Our downtown area looks really nice, but we have ghettos like everyone else.

It's true, it's very hard to generalize this state. It's huge and every city offers something different. I was talking with a friend when I was San Fran and we were talking about the homeless issues. San Fran takes the cake in homeless population. That place is the capitol for the bums. LA has its homeless issue too, but I'm pretty sure SF has it the worst. Perhaps that was taken into mind when developing this city. They just wanted everything that plagues this city accross the state.

It's a symbol of today's modern society (like what Matt said). It's tough out there and we don't live in a perfect world. But, at the same time, I never been to CA. I always pictured beautiful weather, hot women, and crab cakes.
