I say some pretty mean stuff about Spike’s Video Game Awards in today’s first Blip. I’m just bitter because this is the third year in a row that I lost to Geoff Keighley in the “Game Industry’s Most Attractive Person” category. Geoff is handsome for a man.
News Blips:
Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski says his studio will have something “new” and “fresh” to reveal during Spike’s VGAs. I know that you, like me, treat each year’s Spike VGA award show with the reverence it deserves...namely, the same reverence that one would give to a puddle of vomit on a city sidewalk. So it takes someone like Cliffy B promising a new game to convince people to suffer through the mess of forced banter, D-list celebrities, and a palpable lack of respect for the audience and the artists. Epic has only announced that the new title will be a part of this Saturday’s VGA broadcast and that they are developing it internally. The show starts at 8 p.m. I guess I’ll be watching. See the teaser on Spike.com.
DICE will serve up a 2GB patch for Battlefield 3 PC tomorrow. The developer will include bug fixes and balance tweaks in the update, but the huge size is mainly due to the inclusion of the Back to Karkand expansion assets. Weirdly, because of the PlayStation 3’s timed exclusivity for DLC, that expansion pack sitting on everyone’s hard drive won’t be playable on PC until December 13. Get the full changelist here, but don’t expect to read “respect for your time or hard-drive space” among those fixes...that probably won’t come in the next update either. [Joystiq]
HBO won’t bring its HBO GO app to Xbox 360 until “early 2012,” but most other content will be available by the end of December. Tomorrow, December 6, Microsoft will release its console’s autumn update. A big part of the overhaul is the addition of many television and movie content providers to the system’s roster of streaming media. Unfortunately, only EPIX and TODAY will be ready for tomorrow. Video from outlets like Dailymotion, Crackle, and VEVO won’t be accessible until later this month, while HBO GO won’t be ready until some point in 2012. Honestly, I’ll be perfectly fine starting tomorrow...I love me that sweet Meredith Vieira.
Minecraft developer Mojang hopes to work with LEGO on an officially licensed building set based on the popular world-crafting game. The LEGO Group uses a web service called Cuusoo.com that allows amateurs to contribute ideas for new building-block sets. The toy-brick company will automatically consider any concept that receives 10,000 supporters. Mojang submitted the idea for a Minecraft set which currently has around 3,800 supporters. If the executives at either company like money in any way, this project is likely to become a reality.
