When I was looking over last week's April NPD numbers, one game jumped out at me: Pokémon Platinum Edition, checking in with sales of a nifty 433K. OK, the fact that a new Pokémon game has cleaned up on the charts isn't surprising in the least. (Still, approaching half a million units in one month -- wow.)

But it made me think of how badly I misjudged this series. When Pikachu and Co. bounded onto the scene in the late '90s with Pokémon Red and Blue versions, I wasn't surprised. To me, it seemed like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a younger generation. Hearing that it all stemmed from a good game didn't dissuade me too much from brushing it off as a fad.

For a while, though, I was pleased that it brought gaming into the public eye. In fact, I would go so as far to say I was mildly thrilled when one of the early round questions on Who Wants to be a Millionaire (we're talking vintage Philbin era), asked which of four bizarre names was not a pokémon. Hooray, games!

In '99, when it snagged an EGM cover (No. 124, Nov. 1999), I was still intrigued and impressed by its humble-origins story. I even picked up my first Pokémon game around this time, Pokémon Pinball, which remains one of my all-time favorite Game Boy Color games. But by the time the next EGM Pokémon cover hit (No. 134, Sept. 2000), I was embarrassed to carry the issue around. At that point, it was like any fad that dragged on too long -- I was hoping for its merciful demise just so it wouldn't be so prevalent. Since I was sick of it, I assumed everyone else's thoughts would soon follow.

Of course it never did die. Each new game brought in ridiculous more bank for Nintendo. Movies and a television series expanded its appeal. The merchandise continued to make the rounds. I even ended up with a handful of stuff, not even knowing where all it comes from. Check out the pic on the right. That guy on top: an E3 giveaway. The game (which I enjoyed): a gift. That Pikachu in between: My parents gave it to me last time I was home, saying it was mine. I didn't argue -- they must have been right -- but I have no recollection of when or how I got it. I wasn't even a fan and I accumulated the stuff.

I made a Target run yesterday and stopped by the trading-cards section. Pokémon cards dominated the real estate. People still buy these things? I was prepared to mock, but then I realized I was looking at that section to see whether a new Garbage Pail Kids set had come out....

At this point, I'm simply impressed by what this series has done. No hate for the players, no hate for the fact the game is essentially a remake each time. This franchise has had a longer and more lucrative career than most professional athletes, and that's a nice comparison because at some point, even with hated players, you can't help but pay respect when they accomplish something so statistically amazing. Pikachu now stands along gaming's greats and (with apologies to Bill Simmons) would have to be on the Mount Rushmore of Nintendo icons, right?

Much like with Wii Play and Mario Kart DS (Nos. 4 and 8, respectively), I expect to see Platinum Edition on the charts for countless months to come, and I'm OK with that. I may delve into this topic deeper soon, but in the meantime, I'm wondering what thoughts you all have on this Pokémon now-bigger-than-just-a-fad phenomenon, Bitmob community?

I never thought I see Pokemon turn into such a huge scene as it is today. When Red & Blue came out, it was all about collecting all 151. But nowadays it's about raising and training that certain pokemon with the best stats possible in order to whoop someone's ass. Pokemon has become hardcore. I mean yeah, you could play it casually which I did with Diamond, but in order to get the most out of it you have to be dedicated. And damn if Pokemaniacs aren't dedicated with today's versions!

I was only in elementary school when the Pokemon scene started to get insane. I don't think there was one child who didn't bring in their collection everyday hoping to trade for a rarer card. Too bad there were a lot of d-bags at my school who didn't like to play fair. After a kid's collection had gotten stolen, my principle was forced to ban my way of life. Hell, I might've been one of the purchasers of the new game if I hadn't gotten tired of smuggling in my cards everyday. That love affair could've lasted forever.

I remember that Pikachu issue from way back. One of my favorite EGM's ever just for the single fact that it was dedicated to Pokemon. Hell, you guys even had Pokemon episode guide for the anime which was one of my shows as a kid. Ahhh, memories. Anyways, I hear what you're saying. With all the Pokemon branded stuff out there, it's easy to forget that it all stem from a really, really great game. I say that with no hyperbole either. Platinum has shown me just how great the core of this game is. The concept is old and yet it still manages to sink it's hooks into my brain every single time. I've logged in over 73 hours on Platinum and I still plan on logging even more to catch the legendary birds and fulfill my goal of having a lv.100 Umbreon. Raising these creatures and watching them grow into the bad-ass monsters that they become is one of the coolest things in all of gaming. I sincerely believe that. It's weird too because I thought I had outgrown this type of game. Pokemon is starting to teach me a bit about myself. Haha.
what really is crazy for me is that its been not only loved strongly still by people who grew up on blue and red but is still loved by kids now of days, my friends little sister eats pokemon games up, loves em. gotta hand it to gamefreak they found something with a "it" i can see 20 years from now a new nintendo handheld and a new pokemon game still selling tons. when the robots are walking on and crushing our skulls 500 years from now they will be programing pokemon games for their kidbots.

Pokemon will always occupy a special place in my heart. As a child of the nineties,Pokemon was the reason that I got each successive Nintendo handheld. Now that I am older I realize that the RPG elements of the series are a bit dumbed down, however age has also exposed me to the more hardcore facets of Pokemon such as EV training. I suppose my view on it is that, while Pokemon is one of many series that Nintendo whores out for massive profit, at least this one consists of actual GAMES.

"Gotta Catch Them All." Those words will forever be remembered. I would have never guessed that my favorite game of late '90s would continue to strive in today's market. Even as games continue to push the graphical limits of today's technology, it's good to see that tried and true game play still prevails. It brings warmth to my heart to see that what used to bring me smiles, is also bringing smiles in children of all ages today. ....never did get that Mew though. :(

Crispin Boyer got into Pokemon at a really bad time. He once played while he was driving during a road trip. Almost caused him to hit a truck because he didn't look up from his GBA in time.

Man, I almost hate to say it, but I am STILL playing my copy of Pokemon Pearl. I am not too hardcore into it, I don't dismiss my Pokemons due to their stats, but I have put over 90 hours into that game. I feel sad, because generally, I am a normal 24 year old, but damn, I can not quit Pokemon. I am genuinely excited for the Gold/Silver remakes, and will probably buy my wife a DS just so I can trade my Pearl pokes over to the new one.

Such great memories all around. My first Pokemon proper was Silver, which I actually beat! Didn't get as far in Pearl, but I gotta admit, I was once again sucked in after I started playing. Like a few of you said, as simple as the games may be, that have that special something.

That's true success of a property right there. Admittedly, I've never been much of a fan of Pokemon. It's always felt like a Diet-RPG to me. But when it comes to franchises that never go away, I'll gladly take it over any WWII shooter.

I've never owned a Pokemon game. I played my brother and sister's copy for about five minutes, only because you couldn't have more than one game save on the cartridge. Is it worth picking up, not for a Pokemon fan, but for an RPG fan?

I'm not an RPG guy, so not the best one to answer, but from what I understand, this is considered RPG lite. Probably not deep enough for serious RPG fans. Let me know if I'm wrong, though!

I think it's as RPG hardcore as you make it to be. It is really, really deep if you go in wanting to get all that you can out of it. A lot of it goes into the stats of the pokemon, and how you can affect them. A lot of people don't realize this until they read up on IV and EV (I think that's what they are called) and start working on those. What I love about the game is how casual it can be, playing it for 15 minutes is hardly a problem at all, and just trying to raise up a certain pokemon to be able to fight The Elite Four can be very fun.

Pokemon Platinum was a hard sell for me. I own most of the pokemon titles to date (excluding the Hoenn games because their interface is garish) and was worried that Platinum was just Sapphire all over again. Platinum brings to Pokemon what Pokemon Yellow did and is well worth it's place in sales.
