When I was a kid, I stayed up late with my grandfather to watch old cartoons. He loves Popeye, so this Atari 2600 ad makes me think of those late nights pondering what eating an entire can of spinach would do to my muscles [via The Retroist]:
I can accept the way Popeye talks, but I refuse to believe that he would spell aerobics with an "X" and an "S." Hit the jump for some fabulousk sailorin' action.
Oh, I did end up eating lots of spinach because of the cartoon -- Popeye-brand, in fact. The factory that cans the stuff is in Alma, Ark., so I had a pretty steady supply....

I played this on Commodore 64 where it looks quite a bit better. Popeye never got me to eats me spinach though :)
I also had this on the Commodore 64. I love that the ad tells children that they can build muscles by punching beer bottles. That would probably not be published today.
I loved Popeye, though I wonder if some of the old cartoons are appropriate (many of these older cartoons sometimes portrayed black kids as monkey-like). My brother and I thought we'd wear this cartridge out, considering we played it more than just about any other game for our Intellivision. And, yes, Popeye got us to eat our spinach. I still love it today, especially raw in a salad with hard-boiled egg, a little bacon, and a mustard dressing.
I love spinach but I've never tried it from a can.
I had this on my NES when I was super, super little. So awesome!
Popeye really needs to start working out his biceps!!!
Oh was this game unplayable. I don't know if it was the controler or what, but I couldn't get up the dang steps.
