I've spent my share of time hitting the dance pads of the myriad iterations of Dance Dance Revolution at arcades and on consoles. While trying to top my high score is fun -- and one heck of a workout -- I'm not so much dancing as hopping around like a kid with a sugar high and a small bladder.
Developer Softkinetic aims to evolve the rhythm dance market with Silhouette, a game planned for consoles and arcades that takes advantage of 3D camera technology. Similar to Microsoft's Project Natal, Silhouette requires no controller input. That means no more tapping arrows. Instead, you must contort your whole body to the rhythm.
Silhouette is essentially a music-based version of the bizarre Japanese game show Hole in the Wall. Your body appears onscreen as a pixelated avatar, and you must position yourself so that your avatar will fit through the convoluted cut-outs in walls that continually advance toward the screen.
Since the camera tracks your entire body, Silhouette allows you to get your groove on in ways that Dance Dance Revolution can't touch. For example, when I tried my hand at Michael Jackson's "Thriller," I had to make the zombie hand gestures from the music video. Vivid memories of copying MJ's movements in my bedroom mirror as a little kid drifted across my vision.
Sure, I looked like a gangly dork -- not far from the little dork I was at five -- but who cares? Shifting from silly pose to silly pose was unabashedly fun. I smiled more during my 10-minute demo at GDC than I did during an hour of slicing, punching, and pointing with the PlayStation Move -- and I didn't even get to try any of the intriguing co-op features, which require you to work with a friend create complex shapes that will challenge both your teamwork skills and your balance.
That 10 minutes with Silhouette was enough to completely change my perspective on rhythm games and motion control. I'm no longer satisfied with glowing arrows. I don't want to look like that sugar-addled kid who has to pee.
Instead, I want what Silhouette promises: to let me throw my whole body into dancing, look like a fool, and have a ridiculously fun time in the process.
