E3 2011: Sony's new split screen technology may not be as new as you thought.

I'll bet you, just like everyone else got very excited when you saw Sony's new TV. The product in which you have the ability to do gaming with your friends on the same couch, with out having to share the same screen. But did you realize that what Sony is doing is not all that new?

Sony's new 3D-TV will include a pair of Sony's new 3D glasses, and HDMI cable, and a copy of the new upcoming Resistance 3.

This video above shows both the announcement of the new television, as well as a brief explanation of how the new technology works.

Split screen gaming like this, can be accomplished on many televisions that have been out for months. With just a few changes to the settings on some already released 3D-TVS, you can enjoy the feature just as much as people who buy this new TV will. With this in mind why is Sony releasing it as if it were new technology?

This video shows your average person using the 2 player full screen gaming on an already released TV.

This method of local multiplayer can be made even better with the use of modified 3D glasses. 3D glasses like the ones you'll get from the movie theaters when you see a movie like avatar. People can take these cheap, affordable 3D glasses, some duct tape (literally) and then you've got 2 players on the same couch not even having to share the same screen.

This video shows Full split screen gameplay, with slightly modified 3D glasses.

Am I saying no one should buy this TV? No, I'm simply trying to show you that if you already own a good 3D-TV that can do this full screen-split screen multiplayer than there won't be any use in upgrading to this new TV. If you don't own a 3D-TV yet, and this one looks interesting to you by all means go buy this thing. I'm considering buying one myself, because I have not yet invested in a 3D-TV and this one is a good size as well as affordable.
