Sometimes, I’ll play a video game and like a song in it so much that I’ll immediately begin crafting a remix in my head. Then, even after I put it down, the rhythms and melodies will keep going. This process will usually be on repeat until I either finish the game or actually make the song. Such was the case with Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.
Composer Jim Guthrie produced an amazing soundtrack for this title. Yet, rather than doing a remix of one of his reoccurring themes, I was inspired by the simple bell-type sounds in the “Cabin Music” bonus track.
If I wanted a more authentic, old-school hip hop sound, I could have sampled the vinyl version of the S&S:LP (EP is the game, LP is the soundtrack). Hell, even the cassette would have given me a nice, raw texture. Instead, I went with the more accessible digital format. Perhaps once I actually beat the game, though, I’ll pick up a physical copy of the soundtrack and do a couple more proper remixes.
And for those of you who have yet to experience this wonderful, pixelated adventure, I hear developer Capy is finally porting S&S:EP to PC and Mac.
