Electronic handheld games have been around for many decades, and many of us got out first taste of portable gaming on them. I’m not talking about Game Boys or PSPs here -- I mean retro single game units with LCD screens from the '70s and early '80s.
I remember my mom buying a Super Mario Bros. game watch for me as a reward for acing a test at school. I wore it every day, until it broke. Still kept it as a memento for years, but the cat must have dragged it outside and it got lost. Thinking back, it may have been a knock off because the art on the borders was horrible.
Some years later I got Mega Man 2, from Tiger Electronics. Don’t know why I asked for this, because the NES game was infinitely superior in every possible way. Still, I played the hell out of it that Christmas morning, and very little afterwards.
The last electronic handheld I got before finally buying a Game Boy was Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (pictured). Even though it wasn’t based on the NES version, it still had an annoying water level. I guess turtles love swimming in raw sewage.
Which electronic handhelds do you remember playing?
