This week in video-game history is a little slow but incredibly significant with console launches and the birth of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Can you tell I love MegaTen games, yet?

1982: Pitfall goes on sale. During its lifespan, it sold over 4 million copies.

1971: Raph Koster is born. He was the creative director for Star Wars Galaxies and is the founder and president of Metaplace -- a provider of user-developed virtual worlds.
2000: SegaNet goes live. It was the costly Internet service for the Dreamcast that lasted just under a year before poor sales sent the console spiraling into obscurity.
2008: Spore is released. People everywhere began making incredibly rude shapes with their evolvable creatures.

1995: The PlayStation goes on sale in North America. I remember people in my town going crazy over the console during launch week.
1999: The Dreamcast is released and looks absolutely stunning. Too bad Sony's incredibly strong sales with the PS1 generated a substantial amount of buzz for the PS2 and closed the book on Sega's sleek little console.

1998: Spyro the Dragon goes on sale. If you've never played the original Spyro, turn on your PS3 and buy it from the PSN right now. I maintain that this is one of the best PS1 games ever made.
2001: Advance Wars comes out on the Game Boy Advance. This is the only game I've ever pulled from a handheld and thrown.

1987: Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei comes to the Famicom and MSX. This is the first game in the long-running Megami Tensei series and is based off a novel of the same name. While it has never been localized, it lays the foundation for most of themes found throughout the Shin Megami Tensei games.
