Why Black Ops is not Modern Warfare 2.5
Sunday, October 17, 2010

With the recent slew of leaked gameplay footage of the soon to be released Call of Duty title, Black Ops, I have noticed a two pronged reception. Some are welcoming the game with open arms and are excited at what they see. The other side is bemoaning the game as nothing more than MW2 with extra skins and nothing new.

Group 2 is wrong.

Call of Duty Black Ops looks to be the biggest step forward since Cod 4.

Currency, wager matches, enhanced customization (Create-A-Class 2.0), theater mode, emblem editor, new zombies, and more.

Modern Warfare 2 was the laziest entry into the main Call of Duty series.

Cod 4 introduced Killstreaks, perks, custom classes, and started the whole trend through the industry.

World at War added tanks, zombies, co op campaign, more weapons, more perks, more equipment, etc.

What did Modern Warfare 2 add? Custom killstreaks, accolades, callsigns, and deathstreaks. Oh, and the throwing knife.

The problems with MW2 arose from the awful maps, unbalanced perks, over powered weapons, insane deathstreaks, and other things that were implemented badly.

Currency completely changes the dynamic of leveling up in a Cod game. Wager matches help add tension and new modes to the experience. Create-A-Class 2.0 adds more user input and weight to the create a class. Theater mode is just awesome. It will increase the youtube community, and make smack talking to one's friends even cooler. The emblem editor is in the same vein as create a class 2.0, more user input is always awesome. And new zombies? Yes, bloody, please.

Beyond what Treyarch is adding, look at what they're getting rid of.

No more commando, no more danger close, no more painkiller, no more one man army, no more insanely terrible perks, no more hackers to the same severity(theater mode will be used to ban), the list goes on and on.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare is misnamed, it's actually Call of Duty 4: Semtex Edition..

Black Ops is the way forward.

Oh yeah, and all Cod games will look similar. Why? Because the are COD games. That's why they're loved. Don't reinvent the wheel, get some rims.

Peace.

I like how there are no damage multipliers save for flak jacket (reduced explosive damage. People will always spam explosives).

I think there will be more encouragement to be a little creative with how you play considering no one has to worry about stopping power (2x bullet damage) or juggernaut (.5x damage received).

And I'm looking forward to wager match as it adds flavorful game types like Halo's oddball or infection. CoD could've always used off-the-wall stuff that isn't a deathmatch variant or some other traditional objective.

Hopefully after this comes out Treyarch will use that giant dev team they have to use a new engine for their next COD game. These games are still running on the engine that powered Quake 3. Seriously the games look fine, but I can't help wondering how they could benefit from not having to deal with all that old tech. I'm really not interested in COD anymore until they show me something new. I'll probably rent it to play the campaign to see how much all the Hollywood outsourcing they got enhances the story, but I'm perfectly happy with Reach until I see what's next from Bungie or Respawn or what have you.

might buy it, as long as there's no hackers and the game actually gets support from the dev team to deal with said hackers. 50/50 on it still though.
