"Gaming and fatherhood have an interesting intersection with me. My wife labored at home for an entire day before we went to the hospital, during which she want me to be with her but not hovering over her. So I sat with her on the floor and played the entirety of Gears 2. I played the bulk of Fallout 3 with an infant asleep on my chest. My son is now 2 and loves to watch and play games. He will bring me the DS and say "Please, Mario" and let me help him play for a while, but then he hands it to me, lays his head on my shoulder and watches me play.
And Antonio, as for gaming mothers, my wife never played much, but has started now because my son wants her to play Mario with him. She still enjoys being my spotter in most games, looking for items and collectables."

"I just finished Gears 2 in co-op (after having played though it single-player before) and was a little surprised at how well I was doing on Insane difficulty. It seemed a little simpler even than Gears 1 on Hardcore. Whether that is a product of level design or AI design I'm not sure. But my buddy and I laughed all throughout the game when time and again Delta Squad is sent alone against entire armies. And then how often Marcus decides that splitting up is the best plan when heavily outnumbered. The story gave way a little too much to the squad mechanics. But it was still fun. One complaint: I finished both games in co-op, but each time was not awarded the achievement."

"Bryan - Why anyone auto renews the service is beyond me. 12 + 1 month subscription cards can be had from Amazon for $39. I appreciate Amazon treating these as a loss leader, very customer friendly. Unlike MS who seem to have adopted some business practices from the Windows side of the building."

"So, time to stock up on 12 month cards from Amazon? $39 aint bad, unless Micro$oft figures out a way to disable them. But really, only MS could have the stones to pull something like this. Something so entirely anti-customer satisfaction. I guess we all hoped that the MS SOP of "back the customer into a corner then mug him for his lunch money" wouldn't carry over into Xbox, but that's what we get for dreaming."

"I wouldn't be surprised if the name changed before release. Remember that Bio2 was called Sea of Dreams when it was announced and then got slapped with the decidedly uncreative 2."

"I haven't yet played Alan Wake, but what you describe sounds about right. I enjoyed the collectible/puzzle mashup in Batman:AA. Both the Spirit of Arkham and Riddler Trophies worked with the flow of the semi open world game design and fit well with the comic story narrative. The scattered patient interviews worked to a lesser degree, but were fun to listen to while you wandered around."

"How sad is it that most of us can refer to our "first" red ring. Mine took the life of a 5 month old Elite, which to this day sounds like it could take off if it had wings. I've seen better hardware design in pancake griddles."

"s is a good, thought provoking article. You make your case in short when you ask, "How does a 10yr life-cycle, do it all sales pitch, jibe with a warranty and support program that treats the device as a disposable commodity?". The consoles keep gaining more PC like funtionality, but not PC like supportablity. Built in HDDs need to be backed-up externally, allowing you to secure massive time investments like save-games, downloads etc. OS backups should be a function of upgrades in case the latest and greatest bricks your device. And services need to allow whatever the customer would prefer as a repair method, not whatever posts the shortest wait time for PR to brag about. Of course the bigger question comes later, when they want you to drop all your invested time and money, to get the new device that "does everyt"

"pletely agree on LBP. Just had to drop it as the levels got more complicated. I guess the other factor here is whether you can adapt to the controls. LBP was so loose that after many hours it was still too unpredictable. While Killzone 2, though not highly responsive, was consistent and easy to get used to. Uncharted games have such good animation transitions that it makes the lag in response make sense, as such that you believe he can only respond to your inputs so fast, almost as though you are guiding another person rather than controlling a com"
