                                                        An "In-Depth" Look at Video-Game Music .

                                                                                      The Music .

A game's soundtrack , for me , is what makes or breaks a game .
Game music is some of the most innovative and inspiring music .
I have here , for example , Halo 3 . It includes one of the most epic and beautiful soundtracks ever compiled into a game .

Imagine looking at the wreckage of a covenant cruiser , right in the middle of New Mombasa .
Knowing the covenant-waged war is tearing apart the human race , knowing there is only one way to stop it , kill them all .

See how a song can embody so many emotions that in-game voice or actions cannot ? . I think it's something short of a miracle .

Almost every game you play or see in this day and age , has some sort of a composed soundtrack .
And that soundtrack is what sets the theme , mood , and feelings in the game .

Take another example for instance , Fallout 3 .
The "old-timey" folk and country music sets the mood and theme of the entire game , making it feel as if anything in Fallout 3 , could happen to us at any moment .

Video-Game music plays a HUGE part in the "Game Experience" , seeing as it has been present since some of the first days of video-games .

From "Space-Invaders" to "Fallout : New Vegas" games music , sets the tone of how the game is played and how it relates to you .

I know I have left MANY games and mentions out , but please , feel free to comment and express your love for your favorite game soundtracks .

Thanks - Ekaalb .

PS .This topic , was inspired by the playing of the "Halo 3 : ODST" Campaign , late last night .

The funny thing is, I love the Halo 3 music -- even though I don't particularly like the Halo games, and don't even own an XBox. ;)  It is pretty badass though.

I'm totally, shamelessly self-promoting here, which is something I rarely do, but if you really like game score analysis you might like the two-parter I did on the Mass Effect games: part 1 [ http:// data-scayt_word="bit.ly" data-scaytid="1">bit.ly/jRTkV0 ] and part 2 [ http:// data-scayt_word="bit.ly" data-scaytid="2">bit.ly/lqAhQS ].  And Kirk Hamilton (I think) has been doing some great pieces on the topic of game music over at Kotaku.

(Er. Apparently embedding or linking causes havoc on Bitmob these days. Anyway if the comment stays borked forever, there's a link in my profile.)
