Backlog Brigade: Shadow of the Colossus Edition
Alexemmy
Thursday, May 13, 2010

I might have mentioned Shadow of the Colossus a few times. It might very well be my favorite game ever. Like Rob Savillo and Demon's Souls, I have a lot of trouble shutting up about it (just kidding, Rob!). So, when I heard Frank Anderson mention on Twitter that had tried to beat the game almost a dozen times and always gave up, I knew the Backlog Brigade had to come to the rescue.

If you're unfamiliar with us, that's what we do: rescue poor gamers with pile's of shame that could rival the heights of Mount Everest. We swoop in and create a "time bubble" (time bubble technology is copyright, so back off!) around a group of players. Suddenly, that old game seems new again, and a whole group of gamers is playing along with you and talking about it like it had just come out that week.

Later, I collect a handful of the most interesting conversations and tweets, and compile them for public consumption. Just take a look at our past work on such forgotten gems as Eternal Darkness, and... uh, MadWorld. The latter is a better example of the format, but the former is a better game. Either way, you've got an idea, so let's jump into the rules for participation.

It's not all that complicated really. If you want to play along with us, then we need to make sure that we can all talk to each other. Share any and all information such as Twitter, AIM, Email, Google Chat, Google Wave, Facebook, etc. in the comments below. If you would prefer some of those things remain private, then email me at bloodstains85 [at] gmail [dot] com and I will pass it on to all the other participants directly, so that you don't have to post it publicly.

After that, you just need to talk, talk, and talk to the other participants as you play the game, and email me any conversations you might have. I'll edit a variety of them into the final post. But, please actually tweet and discuss the game with people. Last time I had to organize meeting times for conversations and it led to a lot of me in the final post. I'd like you all to contribute equally.

So, there you go. This is super easy to participate in. Just play the game and chat with everyone else. Volunteers?

I wish I could -- I really want to play this game. But I don't have any money with which to buy the game (assuming I could even find it), and things are getting really busy for me with assignments, final essays, and exams.

I'd really like to participate in this edition, but I need to find a copy. Every used one I've seen has too many scratches on the disc. How much time do I have?

I feel like this is the my last chance to play this game. I started it years ago and I have never gotten back to it.

@Rob - Probably a few weeks at least. There's no strict deadline as long as people are still playing and conversing. I plan on ignoring the internet once Field Week is done and just playing this game, but with work and the kid I am usually paaaaaaaaaaainfully slow at completing games. As long as people are playing and discussions are happening, I'll keep it running, so you've got time to order a copy online if you must.

@Harold - Yaaaaaaaay! Harold is in! I wonder if this means I can embed audio of you talking about it on Sophist Radio. That'd be an interesting form of communication to throw into the mix.

You know I am in. I am glad we are open on time though. I would love to say I can just give my concentration to one game, but with 3D Dot Game Heroes and Alan Wake coming I know I will cheat some.

I am really excited to finally try to beat this game! I will go ahead and warn you that I will probably use FAQs to help me progress. A huge part that has kept me held up from beating this game in the past is that I hate using FAQs- especially for a game like this where discovering what to do IS the game. Still, I will use a 10 minute rule while playing this time. If I try for ten minutes and cant figure out what to do then I will check a FAQ or talk to one of the peeps participating here!

We should just call this "The Frank Plays Shadow of the Colossus Support Group."

@Frank - Definitely try to use the support of the BBB first. But, I'm pretty sure I used a FAQ on some of these the first time I played.

Will do!

Crap, I've beaten the game now, but it was quite recent.  Can I still contribute to the discussions?  I actually have a lot to say about this game, and I'm bound to play the contrarian.

Unfortunately, it's not in my pile of shame so I can't join.

However, it is my favorite game of all time, so I think that says enough.

@Bryan - Well, I was going to say "Yeah! Join in!", but if you're going to naysay the game then I WON'T HAVE ANY OF THAT! Haha, I'm just messing around. Feel free to jump in on the discussions, but if you read my debate with Jon Shults over the quality of Shadow of the Colossus, then you'll know I will run circles with you for hours over this game.

This would be awesome, especially since I recently decided to play it on hard mode...but I just got back to NA right now, and my copy is merrily collecting dust in the Land of the Rising Sun.  By the time I get back to it, you'll all be finished.  But seriously, one of my favourite games of all time.

@Frank - You should be in for a treat.  How far did you get on previous attempts?  And have you played Ico before?

OK, Alex -- I ordered this from Amazon (cheaply, too); I should have it within a week. Hopefully, this is still going!

Awesome! We're rounding up a nice crew here. Juan Letona also said he was in. So, we're at 4 confirmed now? Hopefully you all will be more gabby than the last crew.

I'm so excited! I've had this game for a while noe and only played the first twenty minutes. This is the motivation I need to get back to it. You can find me at:

@Alex: Ha, I look forward to our discussion then!  My feelings are actually quite mixed about the game.  We'll see eye to eye on some points, I promise. :D

@Janelle- I have gotten like 6 to 8 Collosi in about 10 to 12 times now. Every time I give up because I am always playing 2 or 3 games at a time. Something big always comes out, or I just get overwhelmed at how the game makes you go from boss fight to boss fight with so little palate cleansing activities.

I have always wanted to beat it though!
