RPGs have not been on top of console gamer's lists for a good long while except for the obvious and beloved Final Fantasy franchise. Role playing games were just not a typical console game genre and have been almost exclusivly enjoyed on the PC. Bethesda Softworks has changed this stereotype. With Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion previously on the Xbox 360 Todd Howard and team accomplished a breakthrough on the RPG console game front.
It was E3 2008 when Howard first showed off elements and gameplay of the latest entry in the Fallout franchise at the Microsoft press conference. Fallout was previously a birds eye view turn based PC RPG. One for the hardcore.
The very first time I heard President Eden's voice parading around on a flying robot's speakers I knew this was going to be a hit AND my kind of game! When Fallout 3 finally released in the fall of that year I immediatly grabbed it and sunk 100 hours into it before I blinked the first time. Endless nights were spent roaming the wasteland, meeting strangers and doing quests as strange as the Oasis or creepy as retrieving the G.E.C.K. with the help of my super mutant friend Fawkes. Did you blow up Megaton, help out the enslaved children or chose to 'kill' President Eden? How about those Enclave? Those are all questions that were asked around the water cooler the next morning while trying to stay awake at work with a Red Bull in hand.
I could probably go on and on about the amazing game that is Fallout 3 but I bet you played it yourself and got goosebumps thinking back to those moments. Remember to loot that dead mercenary hitman and search the locker in the Nuka Cola factory before you leave.
