Trying to keep up with all of the downloadable games and content that's out there these days is enough to make a person cry. But cry no more, because Download Lowdown is here to help. Each week I'll sift through the good, the bad, and the weird to help you get the most from your game system of choice without leaving your house. Plus, if you read now I'll also toss in some choice (usually less-than-helpful) quotes from folks around the Internet at absolutely no extra charge!
This week I get my roll on with Rolando 2, struggle to stay awake through Reel Fishing Challenge, punish some dudes with The Punisher: No Mercy, and finally lose my battle to stay awake with Silver Star Reversi.
Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid
System: iPhone
Price: $9.99
Â
The Lowdown: The original Rolando was a huge hit on the iPhone, and its sequel is poised for greatness as well. The best way to describe the game is LocoRoco on the PSP, but with tilt controls (no, not like the crappy PS3 version). Seriously, it's about as close to LocoRoco as a game can get without getting sued. But LocoRoco is awesome and by extension so is Rolando 2.
If you enjoyed the original you'll love the sequel -- it's mo better. If you're new to the series, however, I'd check out Rolando before moving on to Rolando 2. It's a highly enjoyable game in its own right and it's now just $5.99.
What the App Store reviews say:
Eklab thinks that if you don't like this game, you've got serious issues: "If you don't like this game then you need to kill yourself."
MrWaffles intends no hyperbole in his totally exaggerated comparison here: "Nintendo had Mario, Sega had Sonic, and the iPhone has Rolando. No hyperbole intended."
Tennisdude360 knows crazy. They can smell their own: "Yeah it's 10 bucks, but it's better than $60 Xbox games! If you're still reading this review your crazy because you haven't bought Rolando 2 yet. Haha just kidding. But really, buy this app."
Reel Fishing Challenge
System: Wii (WiiWare)
Price: 500 Points ($5)
The Lowdown: I was going to make fun of this fishing game because it's a fishing game, but then I realized that it's only $5. That makes is less stupid than every other fishing game right there. Even though it's cheap, I was still planning on making a few snarky comments, but after listening to the game's soothing music I was too darn docile to say anything mean. So yeah, if you want to drop five bucks to fake fish, I guess you have my blessing.
What GameSpot users say:
ohjtbehaaave is all about FISHING games -- just not this FISHING game: "Come on.... cut the BS already and give us Sega Bass and Marine FISHING from the Dreamcast!!!!"
Glade_Gnarr remains a huge supporter of Nintendo's WiiWare initiative: "WiiWare sucks, we want more VC!"
Gravymakr got fooled by the soothing music: "I thought it would be a low stress time killer for when I needed to clear my head a bit. What I got was a boring waste of 5 bucks with frustrating controls."
The Punisher: No Mercy
System: PlayStation 3
Price: $10
The Lowdown: The Punisher: No Mercy is exactly the kind of game I can get behind. It's a reasonably fun multiplayer-oriented FPS with a second-tier license. There aren't tons of levels, and the single-player campaign is short as hell, but Sony and ZEN Studios are aware of this and are only charging $10 for it. No Mercy isn't an amazing game, but it's just as entertaining as games like TimeShift and Haze -- and $50 cheaper. And unlike those games, you might actually find people to play against online.
What Twitter says:
Gruel is either the best gamer on the planet, or the story mode is kind of short: "Beat Story Mode a second time, this time with Torgo in online coop, and in under a half hour."
Snskid, like some others, seems to be having some connection issues: "Punisher No Mercy servers suck balls."
Peza16 pretty much sums up what most people think about the game: "It's an alright game, nothing spectacular. It's pretty much what you would expect in paying $10."
Silver Star Reversi
System: Wii (WiiWare)
Price: 500 Points ($5)
The Lowdown: The most interesting thing about Silver Star Reversi (basically the board game Othello, with a fancy name) is that someone thought it warranted a two-plus-minute trailer. I defy you to watch the entire thing at once. I stopped watching 18 seconds in, just after they spent five seconds showing someone trying to select the single-player option. I figured I owed you guys a better effort so I resumed watching and made it 43 seconds in to the part where they still haven't gotten to gameplay and are instead showing us that you can, in fact, turn the background music on and off.
If you make it through this disaster of a trailer, please post what exciting stuff I missed in the comments at the end of the column.
What the Internet says:
Well, it turns out the Internet has nothing to say about Silver Star Reversi. I literally only found four comments about it and they were all about how you can play Reversi in Clubhouse Games. Toss in the fact that only 74 people have watched the trailer on YouTube and this could possibly be the least interesting game ever made. You're welcome!
That's it for this week's Download Lowdown. Have any cool games that you'd like to see covered? Tell me about them in the comments below and I'll check them out. See you next week!
