E3 2010: Three Things I'm Curious About

The vast amount of terrible booth tour invites in my inbox can mean only one thing: E3 is right around the corner. I'm honestly not sure whether or not I'm excited for this year's show. I think "curious" would be the best way to describe my current state of mind. Here are the three things I'm curious about going into this year's show.

It's probably every-other-week that I'm on the Mobcast babbling about my love for the original Shenmue. The sequel didn't have quite the same magic as the first, but I'd kill Brett Bates to find out how this saga ends. OK, maybe I wouldn't kill him, but I would be willing to spill a drink on his nicest shirt or let his dog use his toothbrush.

Why am I suddenly so jazzed over Ryo and friends? This crazy rumor from some random Spanish website is why. I don't really think there's much of a chance of that Sega will revive this seemingly dead-and-buried franchise, but crazier things have happened. I'm such a sucker.

PSP 2?
The PSP was awesome…for a few years. Then Sony decided it would rather redesign the hardware than make good games for the system. It's tough to call the PSP a failure, but I certainly don't think it lived up to its potential.

If Sony does announce the PSP 2 at this year's show they had better have a few big-name titles at the ready; people won't get excited about potential this time around. Oh, and if it doesn't have a second analog stick, I don't even know what to say. That couldn't happen. Could it?

The Show's Vibe
I didn't go to E3 last year. E3 2008 was pretty much a dud and I needed a break from writing about games I had little interest in. Now I'm well-rested and E3 has had another year to return to its former glory. But will it?

I hope so. There's nothing quite like the excitement and energy of a bustling E3 show floor. It's not the spectacle of half-naked booth girls or live skateboarding exhibitions that gets me fired up -- it's new technology and just-announced, mind-bending, amazing-looking games. I want to fall in love with a game or piece of hardware and spend far too much time with it. I want to leave the show and think about how I can't wait to own it. God I love that feeling.

You know, maybe I am excited for the show after all. Are you?

No curiosity re: 3DS or its-not-called-Natal-anymore? I have nothing BUT questions regarding them, as I have yet to hear an argument to buy into 3D or motion controls.

I'll be ecstatic if I can get a reveal of all or some of the Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 roster. Also looking forward to hearing more about Golden Sun DS, Fable 3, and Valkyria Chronicles 2.

I wouldn't mind a surprise or two either, especially about what Microsoft has cooking for the 360 this holiday.

I guess I am curious about the 3DS, but I'm not excited about it. Natal and Move...I'm not really interested in them. I think they're going to be gimmicks. But I guess I'll find out -- I've got an appointment to see Move up close and personal.

When's the last time you felt that excitement, Aaron? Which game?

I'm curious about console/tech developments, but if Golden Sun DS gets a release date then I'll be happy.

Greg: Specifically at E3? The original Rock Band blew my mind. I guess that was E3 2007. Nothing really rocked my socks off at E3 2008, though I was pretty impressed with PB Winterbottom at the time. Oh, LittleBigPlanet looked amazing at 2007, but I was a little less pumped for it after playing it at E3 2008.

As for the last hardware to get me all giddy? I'd say the PSP and the Xbox 360.

I hope Ubisoft will Show Beyond Good and Evil 2 ...

I gave up on hoping for Shenmue years ago and a piece of myself died with that hope. I'm pretty sure I'd start bleeding internally if Shenmue III was announced... but in the off chance that I could survive such a colossal announcement, I'd buy a ps3 immediately.

Totally wrong. The PSP was never cool. Except when it was in magazines before it came out. And it is very safe and apt to say that it  was a failure. Not as much as the PSP Go, but still...

Honestly, the game industry moves so fast that I am still getting caught up on games from E3 2008!!! I am excited, but I really wish the corporate monster that is the video games industry would slow down...

Here's Item No. 4, Aaron: How many days can Jason go before losing it from the crush of humanity at E3? I gave up reporting in the early 2000s because I could no longer deal with crowded events without wanting to attach a bulldozer blade to my belly and plow through everyone in my way.

I'm very excited for next month's E3, tonnes of games I cant wait to see more footage of and get more info on.  I'm especially interested in Ninja Theory's next game Enslaved.

Hardware and tech though? eh I doubt their will be anything that will peak my interest.

Did you notice on that Shenmue III rumor page there is an identical article just below it for E3 2009. That probably is the only game that can get me excited. There are plenty of games I am interested in playing but we get plenty of news, previews, trailers, screenshots, etc. throughout the year on just about everything. A lot of big game unveilings seem to get leaked before the official announcements too so I'm never sure how many surprises to expect from E3. I can also go a few more years without any new hardware since I still need to get a HDTV :)

I'm excited to learn about new IPs.

I have questions as to what Nintendo's going to do next with the Virtual Console and WiiWare. It would be great if they let Wii owners have accounts like XBLA and Steam so they could just download games on to any other Wii or DS. And as for storage, I still think they haven't done enough with the sd cards. All I want is a portable hard drive officially compatible with Wii with no limits.

By the way, my finest shirt is whatever shirt you'll be wearing at the Mobcast recording today, Aaron. I'll bring the soda!

You didn't bring let me spill a drink on you at the Mobcast today. Now I'm never going to get Shenmue 3! :(

"Would you rather live in a world without Brett Bates, or a world without Shenmue?"

I would love the Shenmu series to come back, and since they have kind of proven the series can sell in Japan (I would call the success of Yakuza proof that Shenmu could be resurrected and sell) I would hope that Sega would revive this awesome series. If they would just ratchet up the action a notch and tone down the monotonous jobs then I think it could work out. Find jobs that are fun and this series could be HUGE.

PSP is such an interesting system, but Sony has shown over and over again that they cannot push two systems at once. Their half hearted attempts to keep the PSP relevant have shown a huge pattern- Sony talks big about the PSP for a few months and then go almost dark on it for a long time.

If there is one saving grace to the PSP, it is that it keeps selling despite there not being a constant flow of games. It just seemed to me when I was working retail that those PSPs were being sold to parents who didn't know better for kids who didn't know better. They would buy the system, and then come trade it in months later when they realized they just weren't playing it much.

I am kind of holding my breath for this E3. I feel a bit like how you feel right before someone tears off a bandage. It might not be too bad, but it also might be terribly painful.

I am worried about the concentration on motion controls, but also hopeful that there will be more than just throw away party games. I hope there are big surprise announcements, but I feel like there is a good chance we will be seeing a ton of the same old, same old.
