The vast amount of terrible booth tour invites in my inbox can mean only one thing: E3 is right around the corner. I'm honestly not sure whether or not I'm excited for this year's show. I think "curious" would be the best way to describe my current state of mind. Here are the three things I'm curious about going into this year's show.
Greg: Specifically at E3? The original Rock Band blew my mind. I guess that was E3 2007. Nothing really rocked my socks off at E3 2008, though I was pretty impressed with PB Winterbottom at the time. Oh, LittleBigPlanet looked amazing at 2007, but I was a little less pumped for it after playing it at E3 2008.
As for the last hardware to get me all giddy? I'd say the PSP and the Xbox 360.
Did you notice on that Shenmue III rumor page there is an identical article just below it for E3 2009. That probably is the only game that can get me excited. There are plenty of games I am interested in playing but we get plenty of news, previews, trailers, screenshots, etc. throughout the year on just about everything. A lot of big game unveilings seem to get leaked before the official announcements too so I'm never sure how many surprises to expect from E3. I can also go a few more years without any new hardware since I still need to get a HDTV :)
I have questions as to what Nintendo's going to do next with the Virtual Console and WiiWare. It would be great if they let Wii owners have accounts like XBLA and Steam so they could just download games on to any other Wii or DS. And as for storage, I still think they haven't done enough with the sd cards. All I want is a portable hard drive officially compatible with Wii with no limits.
I would love the Shenmu series to come back, and since they have kind of proven the series can sell in Japan (I would call the success of Yakuza proof that Shenmu could be resurrected and sell) I would hope that Sega would revive this awesome series. If they would just ratchet up the action a notch and tone down the monotonous jobs then I think it could work out. Find jobs that are fun and this series could be HUGE.
PSP is such an interesting system, but Sony has shown over and over again that they cannot push two systems at once. Their half hearted attempts to keep the PSP relevant have shown a huge pattern- Sony talks big about the PSP for a few months and then go almost dark on it for a long time.
If there is one saving grace to the PSP, it is that it keeps selling despite there not being a constant flow of games. It just seemed to me when I was working retail that those PSPs were being sold to parents who didn't know better for kids who didn't know better. They would buy the system, and then come trade it in months later when they realized they just weren't playing it much.
I am kind of holding my breath for this E3. I feel a bit like how you feel right before someone tears off a bandage. It might not be too bad, but it also might be terribly painful.
I am worried about the concentration on motion controls, but also hopeful that there will be more than just throw away party games. I hope there are big surprise announcements, but I feel like there is a good chance we will be seeing a ton of the same old, same old.
