GAMEFUL

Games can save the world. No, not the Mushroom Kingdom or Mobius but the real world. At least that’s what game designer Jane McGonigal is saying. A lot of you probably saw her TED talk earlier this year. Reactions in the gaming world were mixed; some agreed with her optimism about the power of games and gamers, but quite a few gamers raised an eyebrow to this talk and gave as a counter-argument the numerous trolls on WoW, or you average racist/misogynist/homophobic teenager on Xbox Live. The important difference that a lot of skeptic seems to forget is that not all games are favorable to the kind of positive gamer attitude McGonigal is talking about.

Here is why I’m writing this article right now. If you want to find what are those games and maybe even want to participate in the creation of other real worldchanging games, McGonigal and a few associates are creating GAMEFUL, a Secret HQ for Worldchanging Game Developers.

Using Kickstarter, they’ve already surpassed their $2,000 goal and are now at $14,715 with 134 backers. While they are very happy about achieving their goal so quickly, they are now setting a new community goal: getting 500 backers by the end of September. All this 500 backers challenge will of course be linked to a meta-game and a collective mission for those 500 “founders”.

If you are interested in worldchanging games and think that games can truly make us better and even change the world, be sure to be one of the first 500 people to join GAMEFUL.
