'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: The Videogame' review.

In my review of the videogame for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I asked EA to quit killing their games by concentrating more on getting them out by a certain date rather than focusing on the quality they end up being. I had a little bit of hope that the delay of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince would lead EA to keep working on that movie's videogame. I was hoping they would make the control work better, on integrating story and game better, and do away with the jarring transitions from the last game that kept ripping away the immersion factor.

Well, here we are six months after the initial release date and we are left with probably exactly the same game we would have gotten six months ago. While the initial hour was much better designed that Orders mess of an intro, things quickly devolve into the same trial of 'go here, mix this potion, fight this duel, trigger this cut scene'  that held back the last game from greatness.

Again the main shame of all of this is that EA and their developers obviously spent a great deal of time making an accurate representation of Hogwarts. Somewhere along the way they just simply forgot to add the life and energy to turn this lavish environment into something worth exploring beyond the scope of just making your way to the next mission.

There are crests to find and clubs to join, but none of this really goes far in making you feel like a true member of the Harry Potter universe. Instead you are really just a casual observer with little to no control over the events taking place. The biggest offender is Quidditch, which sounds like an awesome addition until you realize that all you do is fly through rings over the course of a scripted flight path. Boooorrrrriiiinnnggg!

While Hogwarts itself is a site to behold, even if the 360 version simply feels like the Wii version in a better resolution, where the game truly looks butt ass ugly is the character designs. Words cannot begin to describe how awful most of them look.

I did have a bit of fun playing this game... OK maybe 'fun' is not the right word. If I am going to tell the truth, I am enough of a Harry Potter fanboy that even this meager offering of the Potter universe is enough to make me feel like I got my $50 worth out of this game, but I seriously doubt that most will feel the same.

At this point I think the only way we will ever see the epic Harry Potter videogame that could be made, is when the movies have finished releasing and someone can make a game free of sticking so drudgingly close to the movie's script. If a developer took this code, fixed some control issues (really, calling what this game offers 'targeting' is an affront to the word), was given freedom to expand beyond just the key scenes of the books and then took some more queues from the Rockstar game Bully then I think we could have a truly great Harry Potter game. For now all we get is this- a game that is destined to attract only the most loyal of Harry Potter fans. It might be enough for EA to make a profit off of, but surely more effort could have landed them a game that branched out beyond just the Potter faithful... it might have made them oodles of cash as well. It is just too bad that EA does not see things that way.

Over 500 views, yet not a single comment? Why is this review so popular, and why are none of its readers reading my other posts, commenting or going to my website?
Is this just a fluke because of the popularity of the movie...?
I really don't know how to take the reception to this post.
Does it mean that this review sucks, it great, or is just on a good subject. I am 100% flummoxed.

That's a pretty decent amount of views. You never know with the comments, sometimes people don't have a login and are too lazy to register, or just don't have anything to add...

It's too bad there's never been a Harry Potter game that really did the story and world justice. It wouldn't be an easy thing to make, though, so I'm not surprised.

I try not to go to other websites as if you posted here then here is where all of it should be. However as far as the game goes I read this twice now seeing if I really want to rent this. Over all anything Harry Potter will have there fan base flock to it. Yes I went there.

A good review, and I agree with you and Demian that although the world of Harry Potter would make a great game if done right, it likely won't be done right for another 10 years until someone makes it into an MMO.

Once the license becomes worthless for EA, then they will sell it, and then we can have a good Harry Potter game...

Toby- I think you might misunderstand my intentions wanting people to go ti my site. I post on Bitmob first because I love the staff and reading what the Bitmob community has to say, second because I think this is a great community of writers that can offer a lot as far as suggestions and advice, third because I hope that even a few people will like my writing enough to check out my little nothing of a site. I might be misunderstanding your comment, but I would hope that no one would see me linking to my site as me trying to steal Bitmob readers... My site is so small that I don't really see us as competition for any other site out there...
I think to expect every writer for this site to just write for this site only is a bit crazy. The atmosphere for getting hired by a big site or publication is just too slight these days, and as a future father I would love to see some kind of possibility of earning some money for this at some point in the future, and right now starting my own site is one of the only ways I see this happening.

Rant over.

Demian- A good Harry Potter game would not be easy to make, but EA has done such a good job sculpting a workable version of Hogwarts that it is really a shame that the game cannot live up to that level of quality through out.

No worries Toby. I think I am a little up in arms about the whole thing just because I have been working my ass off lately to very few returns.
I think the idea that my wife is pregnant is kind of scaring me about how much longer I can be spending time writing things like this. While I love writing ever since I lost my freelance gig my enjoyment that comes with writing has been equaled by my depression at how hard it is to get the ball rolling on your own thing.
I don't know. I am ranting again...

Even the work they did re-creating Hogwarts was all done for the last game. It sounds like they put no effort into this one. Like you guys have said, it would be very difficult to make a great Harry Potter video game, but I think it is possible.

I think having to follow the movie so closely really hurts the game. Just use the universe and create an adventure from there. Of course, that might be out of their hands; J.K. Rowling might not let them get very creative with the license.

All I know is that I loved the books, think the movies are pretty good, and feel that the games are terrible.

Congrats on the stellar number of hits, Frank. You certainly know what and how to write about something in order to draw people in. I'd just like to point out a tip that can make your writing better. It's a technique called parallelism, and it can make sentences easier for the reader to absorb. I'll use the following of your sentences as an example.

"I was hoping they would make the control work better, on integrating story and game better, and do away with the jarring transitions from the last game that kept ripping away the immersion factor."

You can both reduce the number of words in this sentence and convey your point better. This is done through parallelism. You create parallelism by maintaining like structures within a sentence. Let's take a look at the parts of your sentence that I underlined.

"I was hoping they would make the control work better, on integrating story and game better, and do away with the jarring transitions from the last game that kept ripping away the immersion factor."

These three phrases stem from the word "would." Any three of the phrases could finish the sentence that starts with "I was hoping they would..." Or at least, they should. Currently, the phrase "on integrating story and game better" is at odds with the other two. Can you see why?

The difference is in the verb forms. Of the two similar phrases, the words "make" and "do" are active verbs. The the other phrase begins with "on integrating," which is a preposition and a present participle. So two of the phrases start with a verb and the other with a preposition. This isn't proper parallelism.

To achieve parallelism in this case, simply remove the preposition (on) and turn the present participle into an active verb (integrating -> integrate). The new sentence with parallelism is:

"I was hoping they would make the control work better, integrate story and game better, and do away with the jarring transitions from the last game that kept ripping away the immersion factor."

Now all three phrases relate to the auxiliary verb (would), and the sentence is shorter! Now the reader can easily follow what you were hoping EA would do.

Your number of hits totally dwarfs mine on BitMob, so I'm not trying to be arrogant here. Not in the least. I just wanted to describe an advanced writing technique for you to employ in the future. I hope you found this helpful.

No worries, Spenser! I really appreciate the help!

When I was freelancing for my local paper my editor just fixed issues and printed them. He never gave me notes on what changes he made or what I could do to improve, so I really do love getting feedback that helps my writing improve.

Thanks again. I will edit the piece next time I am at my computer. I am on an iPhone right now and the idea of using the editor on it scares me.
