After boring Alien vs. Predator movies and games, I had to find some better games with aliens and lots of guns. That's when I came across Alien Storm in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
Alien Storm is one of the few beat-em-ups that let players obliterate aliens and store interiors with bazookas and flamethrowers.
Although this 1990 game isn't well known, it was one of those few games that made alien hunting look awesome. Each gamer plays as one of three characters who are known as Alien Busters. They typically work for their own Alien Burgers food truck.
When aliens start to invade the Earth, they turn into the Alien Busters. They're a squad that destroys aliens through any means necessary, with uzis, bazookas, flamethrowers and various other weapons.
Unlike those soldiers in Call of Duty, they don't have to worry about the blast radius of an explosion. All their missiles apparently work at close range. The robot character can even blow himself up to destroy all the enemies in the entire screen.
Sure, it looks really ridiculous. Some of the aliens transform into unpredictably gross forms. The slimy head aliens can even swallow the characters in their mouths. However, there's nothing more fun than blowing up an entire alien head U.F.O. that swallowed you and tried to kidnap you into space.
The best parts of this arcade game, however, are the shooting gallery sections. This game clearly was meant to make you use up your quarters just so you could destroy every single thing in the area, whether you're destroying a car garage or an electronics store. Although the screen quickly fills up with hordes of aliens with claws and alien balls with razor-sharp teeth, there's nothing more satisfying than blowing them up to smithereens.
Unfortunately, this game didn't make for a decent conversion to the Genesis. The game is missing all the funny cut-scenes from the original arcade game. The backgrounds look more like boring mock-ups of midwestern homes. The game doesn't even have all the scenes where the aliens are kidnapping the humans and swallowing them up.
This is also one of the toughest beat-em-up games ever made. On either version of the game, the aliens can literally gang up on your character and sap your life away. The screen is too cramped to hold all these wide enemy sprites.
To make matters worse, I had to make it to stage three with only one life, just so I could open up the Alien Syndrome game in my copy of Sonic's Ultimate Game Collection. At least the publisher allowed me to cheat by using save states in the game.
Although this obviously wasn't the best designed game for the Genesis, it still made for tons of entertainment. I don't think there's any other game where I laughed at an alien gobbling my character up. If only the Men in Black alien invasion looked as funny as this one.
