Rereleases and Rehashes: Aren't We All Nostalgic Suckers?

EDITOR'S NOTEfrom James DeRosa

Aren't we all a bunch of suckers?! Chris is right: Since I heard about a possible rerelease of Team Ico's classics, I really just want to play Shadow of the Colossus with a decent frame rate. Halo: Reach, Other M, and whatever indie title you might think of can go suck an egg!

What wonderful news! I get to pay even more money for games I've already experienced!

Huh?

For those who don't know, Sony is rereleasing Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 3 early next year. And listen, I'm sure there will be improvements on the frame rate, a high-definition coat of paint thrown on for good measure, and gameplay tweaks for each game. But who cares? It's Ico and Shadow of the Colossus...again.

Sarcasm aside, this rerelease really excites me.

But do you ever get the feeling that "nostalgia" is a buzz word  -- at least concerning video games -- that a public-relations flunky somewhere produced to elicit strong feelings of a bygone era. You know: a time when the sun shined more brightly, and lollipops tasted like magic?

Somehow, through an unspoken, general agreement, the video game industry has obtained almost exclusive rights to proper use of the word "nostalgia."

And I'm a total sucker.

One of my favorite PS3 games is Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. And I just "rebought" Starcraft because the box had the number "2" on it. Both are phenomenal, and I would purchase them again without hesitation. But come on, I've already played these games! What is wrong with me?

I've been pretty good about taking risks lately. Thanks to Bitmob editor James DeRosa, I bought Drawn: The Painted Tower (fantastic game), and thanks to community member Daryl Bunao, my next purchase is going to be Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (I've already spent a good amount of time with the demo). Basically -- long and short of it -- I'm trying new things and experiencing alien genres.

And you know what? It feels good.... It's refreshing.

But sometime next year -- if Walmart.com and Famitsu are to be believed -- I'll be walking into my local game store and asking the cashier to fetch me a copy of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus...again. And while I love those titles, I've purchased the previously with money I don't have anymore. But, I will politely hand the clerk more money that will no longer be mine. Then, I will thank him for allowing me to be a sucker -- experimentation with strange titles be damned.

Indeed, I'm a sucker for nostalgia. We all are, and we should be aware of it. At least when it comes to great games.

The HD video Sony just put out does look really damn pretty...I may have to pick these up again too.

You're no more of a sucker than the person who shells out $60 every year for the newest additions of sports games. In fact, I would argue that you are much less of a sucker than they are -- at least Ico and Shadow of the Colossus came out like four or five years ago. Plus, if the games come in a bundle, it would make for a cool collector's item.

I just finished a 5 page long discourse on this matter. It's going to take some time to edit it all together, but after that, I hope you'll come read it. This is a good synopsis. It's true nostalgia makes us a bit blind; me certainly.

When I heard the rumor of the ICO/SotC bundle, I turned into my original PS2 copies for a pretty good chunk of change. I'm sure a lot of people are going to enjoy these well made pieces of art, especially if they're going into them for the first time.

Also, thanks for the namedrop. I'm glad that I've at least persuaded one person to try out Recettear.

Of course, arguably, these rereleases are also for those of us who *ahem* didn't get to play those games the first time around. I never owned a PS2, but I constantly hear and read about how good those games are. And I'm excited to finally play them.

Also, for me, getting to play awesome games I missed is the biggest perk of the Wii's Virtual Console (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Super Metroid) and the PS1 Classics on PSN (Resident Evil 2), not replaying games I already own/beat...though there's a couple there, as well (Zelda II, Kirby's Adventures in Dreamland), haha!

Arguing against re-releases is useless unless they really do prevent new games from being made.

It's really no different from an old classic movie getting released on Blu-Ray. Same thing, higher quality.

And of course, not everyone got to play the original games or owned the console they were on. Ico in particular is actually a bit difficult to find and costs around $50 used.

I agree with Ben and Daniel -- I just wrote a post about how I missed some classic console exclusives because I owned a different console. I'm really looking forward to going back and playing some of them. So I'm grateful for some rereleases.

@ Daryl Bunao: Thanks for writing about Recettear! I would've missed it if  you hadn't written that article.

@ Ben @ Daniel @ Layton: The thought crossed my mind about people missing out on certain games, and I hope that I didn't come across as not wanting rereleases. Like you guys, I've missed my fair share of games over the years.

My main point is that because I loved these two games, amongst others, I'm willing to fork over more dough to play a game I enjoyed.

Thanks for the comments!

I like Daniel's analogy of DVDs to Blu-Ray. I would even take the argument a step further for those who only have one out of the series. I own "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" on DVD but I just bought the "The Man With No Name" trilogy on Blu-Ray because I did not own "A Fist Full of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More". For me it was a perfect time to upgrade since I didn't own the whole set, same goes with Ico/Shadow of the Colossus rerelease. I don't own Ico so what better time to upgrade and final get to experience a PS2 classic.
