Is the future of gaming here already? Not quite....

News Blips:

Apple officially announced the iPad today. As far as games go, the majority of the apps that currently run on the iPhone will run on the big-brother tablet. Considering the apps were originally designed for the smaller-screen iPhone,  they can either run in a small window with the regular resolution, or using "pixel double" so the game can fit the iPad's larger screen in an aesthetically pleasing way. EA demoed Need for Speed: Shift on the device, showing off its multi-touch interface. Really, Apple's iPad isn't anything Earth-shattering as far as gaming goes, but we'll see how things turn out once developers start designing games for this new platform. [engadget]

Horror film news site Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Warner Brothers is interested in a "redo" of the Mortal Kombat movie franchise. Previously, Warner Brothers picked up the rights to Mortal Kombat (along with Spy Hunter) after acquiring Midway Games. Hopefully this new flick based on the 1992 ultra-violent fighting game will be good...it's not like the bar has been set very high. [Bloody Disgusting]

Digital distribution platform Steam is offering the cult-classic Psychonauts for the outrageous price of two dollars for today and tomorrow. Fans of Brutal Legend should take note as Tim Schafer, the creator of the 2009 metaltastic game, is also responsible for this psychic adventure. Seriously, you probably have two bucks in change lying around the house right now; If you haven't already, go buy this game! [Steam]

In case you missed today's video blips, Marcus and Dom of Gears of War fame will be making a cameo appearance in the upcoming Lost Planet 2. Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski at Epic Games explained that LP2 publisher Capcom reached out to them to ask if they'd be interested in this crossover. Do you think Bitmob could get Marcus and Dom to make an appearance on our website if we just ask? [Kotaku]

You know, the first Mortal Kombat movie, by Paul Anderson, was actually pretty good. Bad dialogue, but the action held up alright, especially the fight scenes, and it had good effects. Perfectly fine popcorn movie.

The sequel was so horrible it bespotted everyone's memory of the franchise in films.

That said, I'm not sure there's much left there to work with. I enjoyed the PS2 era games but they really didn't introduce much of interest in terms of plot or characters. Why not make some popcorn movie out of Soul Calibur instead?
