I seriously hope that this boycott is some sort of clever viral promotion on Sega's part, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually authentic.

News Blips:

Sonic 4A group of Sonic purists have created a petition to promote boycotting Sonic the Hedgehog 4. They plan to purchase the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on the launch day of the newest installment in an attempt to show Sega their dissatisfaction with the sequel. Keep in mind, their disapproval is based on the small amount of gameplay footage currently available. The question is: Which of the 100 different ports of the game do they plan to buy? [Destructoid]

Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki and his former employer, Tecmo, have reached a settlement over their previous legal dispute over unpaid salary and bonuses. The eccentric developer released a public statement to announce the resolution and hint at his new project, which he hopes will have "a greater depth of play than before." Is this a greater depth than a hardcore fighting game or a sexy-girl dressing and stretching simulator? [Joystiq]

Over 27,000 people have voted to name a new Derby, England road after video game star Lara Croft. Croft was originally created in Derby, and the enthusiasm for her can be seen via the 89% of the vote that she captured. The road is to be named Lara Croft Way. What's next? A Pac-Man Plaza? What about a Halo Highway? [BBC]

Speaking to Wired's Chris Kohler, Nintendo's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway bet the journalist a steak dinner that the new The Legend of Zelda game for Wii will drop in 2010. Kohler is pessimistic that Nintendo would release high-profile Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games all in one year, but Dunaway is confident that the game maker will follow through on their hopeful 2010 lineup. I wish I could bet steak dinners against release dates of games. [Wired]

The Sonic 4 hate is ridiculous. They actually got something they wanted and now they hate it more than ever.

I am looking forward to Sonic 4 in episode format :)   Now if someone would just remake Mystical Ninja

Buying copies of the original Sonic seems like a fitting protest for these people, since it's the only Sonic game they actually seem to like. I haven't seen whining like this since Windwaker dared not to look exactly like Ocarina of Time.

@Cameron, and Wind Waker was amazing and spawned a different lineage of Zelda games. Their method of protest may seem fitting, but it's also pretty silly.

The Wii's lineup for the rest of the year is going to kick some serious ass.  Unfortunately, the 'putting all your eggs in one basket' idiom might end up ringing true, and I fear for the fate of 2011.
