Retro Ads: Akumajou Dracula

The Castlevania series doesn't seem very compatible with arcades, but that didn't stop Konami from releasing Akumajou Dracula in a standing cabinet.

Known as Haunted Castle in the U.S., this clunky remake of the first Castlevania game is poorly realized and frustratingly difficult to control. This wasn't just a Nintendo Entertainment System hooked up inside an arcade cabinet, either. Konami completely redesigned it.

By the time this released in 1987, the first game was already out on the NES. The name change seems strange, but maybe someone knew that directly comparing the two would damage home cartridge sales?

Check out the rest of the Japanese flyer, as well as the American one, after the jump.

That video is part of a Let's Play series but is the least annoying example of gameplay I could find. I should start recording my own footage for these games.

I always thought all the old Castlevanias were clunky...even the home console ones. :)

Is it just me, or does that Japanese poster make Dracula kind of look like the Joker?

@Matthew: Dunno, he looks more like the Green Goblin to me!
