The Drunken Moogle: Phoenix Down

This drink recipe is very peculiar. Typically, I am very against anyone mixing absinthe; it's a liquor best enjoyed with a little added water and not much more.

But the idea of mixing it with a similar herbal liquor like Zwack isn't so repulsive once I think about it. Of course, I don't quite see the connection between strong anise flavor and a sunny, life-giving phoenix from the Final Fantasy series. However, it really looks pretty [via the Drunken Moogle]:

Ingredients:

1/2 shot Absinthe
1/2 shot Zwack
2 tsp. Simple Syrup
1 splash Grenadine
Club Soda

Check out the Drunken Moogle site if you're interested in making this oddly herbal drink.

Ah, Bitmob. It's been helping me get drunk since 2009.

I gotta call a little foul on this one because without a specific brand of absinthe mentioned the taste is completely up in the air. Absinthe, more than any other drink I have ever had, changes in taste almost completely based on what ingredients are used to make it. Most taste like black liquorish, but the degrees vary so much that some are as different as night and day.

I think I liked their Blazblue drink more, but the experiment with absinthe sounds interesting. Not sure how I'd associate it with a life-giving Phoenix Down though. :-P

I understand the issue with absinthe in this drink but I think it relies on finding a good-quality one. A good absinthe should have a subtle anise flavor that gets stronger as you drink it.

I wouldn't drink an Absinthe that wasn't made in France at this point, as the Czech stuff can kill you. And French Absinthe is based off of old recipes and are not just wormwood dumps. That's what can really change the flavor. If a brewer uses a wormwood analog or overuses wormwood, it can completely destroy what should be a subtle balance.
