Walking Dead 1

This post contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Episode 1.

Your party members are the most important part of surviving a zombie apocalypse. The right travel companions could be the difference between life and death...I assume. Since zombies don't actually exist -- and all of my attempts at making them have left little more than a pile of rotting corpses in my basement -- the need for a crew could all just be a way to create dramatic tension and not actually be necessary. Still, almost all living-dead-related media have taken this approach.

Telltale's newly released video game adaptation of The Walking Dead is no different, but it actually gives you some say in the matter. In the first episode, the developers give you the choice of which of your post-apocalyptic vacation buddies gets to continue his sight-seeing tour: Carley, the eager reporter with a good shot, or Doug, the out-of-shape dork with a wealth of technical know-how. At the end of the episode, the game presented me with statistics regarding my moral dilemmas, and I found that a mere 26 percent of players joined me in choosing to save poor, schlubby Doug. So, I'm going to defend Doug's right to live against a pervert who likes tight skirts, Bitmob's own Jeff Grubb, one of the 74 percent.

Honestly, when forced to make the decision in the heat of the moment, I instinctively chose Carley -- probably just because I've got a thing for girls in office attire. But I couldn't actually figure out what I was supposed to click on to prevent her from dying, and found myself staring at a game over screen. As the game was loading, I had a chance for reflection and came to the realization that Doug was the correct choice.

Jeff, you know that Carley isn't even aware that a radio requires either a plug or some batteries to function, right? Not only that but she doesn't know the names of the different battery types or how to insert them correctly when the label clearly shows her. Why on Earth did you think she'd help you survive the end of the world?

Carley, pictured here not understanding the most basic of technology while Doug keeps watch. You know, doing something useful.

Jeff: In my defense, I didn't have a long, luxurious game-over screen to consider this life-and-death choice. The walkers were bearing down on us, and I went with my gut.

That small window of time gave me opportunity enough to think of two primal justifications for my decision to save Carley: Lady good at gun. Lady is pretty.

Alex: Are you sure it was your gut you went with?

But you agree with me, then, that Doug was the better choice? I mean, it'll probably be pretty hard to come across anyone else who has memorized all the codes for programming a universal remote in the zombie apocalypse. I'm sure he has other useful skills as well, though. An electrician or a mechanic would probably be better, but I'll take whatever I can get. I'm more likely to find another person who can competently aim a gun in these hickvilles we're travelling through than I am a tech guy.

J: I don't know. Carley's killer aim is best suited to keeping me alive in the near term. Our biggest threat in the next few weeks is still going to be things we need to shoot. Down the line, Doug's net worth probably outweighs Carley's, but that line of reasoning would have required more time (or brain power) to process than I had.

Besides, Carley knew who I was and still trusted me. That's got to be worth something.

The Walking Dead 3
Carley, still trying to figure out why that battery-less radio won't work.

A: Yeah, she said she wasn't going to tattle on you for now, but you know she'll let that information out some time down the road. Another reason it was convenient to let her get eaten by zombies before that ever happens.

Either way, both of them have their advantages and disadvantages, yet for every four people to beat the first episode, three of them chose Carley. That's a pretty big difference. Do you think they were all thinking about her aiming skills, or are gamers inherently built to rescue the girl? Like, some sort of deeply rooted -- possibly misogynistic -- habit that comes from decades of being tasked with saving princesses.

J: I doubt they were thinking about her aiming skills.

It's the most basic instinct of the species, isn't it? To reproduce. You said it yourself: Before you had the time to think, you were ready to white knight as hard as the rest of us. I won't speak for anyone else, but I often require an extra second to remove gender from my snap judgements. I don't feel good about it, but it's true.

And this is where The Walking Dead -- or at least this first installment -- fully succeeds. The immediacy of these no-win scenarios reveals interesting wrinkles in a player's character in a way that only well-written fiction can.

You know that each future episode is going to end with a huge choice comparable to this one.

A: Couldn't agree with you more on that point.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens to me on the path I've chosen and then replaying it to see how the other paths go. I just hope Doug makes himself useful somehow because he certainly isn't much to look at.

I'm one of the 74% who saved Carley as well. While the radio thing is definitely not good (honestly, I blame that on the writers -- no one, and I mean no one, is that stupid. It would be one thing if she were in shock, but she never comes across that way. It's the one mega glaring flaw in an otherwise excellent game. *****Minor puzzle spoiler***** Well, that and why I just can't use Lee's father's cane to grab the brick...****end spoiler*****) I don't really need a guy who memorized universal remote codes either.

Of course, I kinda reconsidered later for the same points you mention. It's probably easy to find someone who can use a gun, but I also thought that since Carley's a reporter that means we could eventually end up at the station -- where there's a news helicopter. That's pretty useful. I'm probably totally wrong, but you never know. Plus no one might be capable of actually flying it...but yeah.

That's probably the coolest thing about the game to me -- I really put a ton of silly extraneous thought into the choices, in much the same way I did in Witcher 2.  I like that games are making me weigh the options of my choices instead of just selecting obvious answers to move a morality bar. It's certainly a step in the right direction. You can make a case for saving either Doug or Carley -- and I'm sure both will be useful moving forward, as long as there are no more radios that need batteries.

" no one, and I mean no one, is that stupid." Except the main character (I.e. you) who picks it up...presses the Power button on and off..and turns the volume dial. Yeah...and Carly is the stupid one.

Any normal intelligent person would do that first -- and I'm still the one who figured out it didn't have batteries. What's Carley's excuse? She was there fiddling with it for god knows how long before I showed up to save the day.

Plus, that doesn't change the fact that she's too stupid to actually insert them properly. It's a lazy piece of narrative crafting.

It was the influence of years of playing Mario that made me save Carly over Doug, honest that was it lol
Acutally I thought about the gun, I wouldn't have a problem taking the gun from her then feeding her to the zombies to slow them down while I get away.

As another of the 74%, I did notice an important aspect of the game, besides my "gut," that influenced my decision of saving Carly. Dialogue.

You spend almost twice as much time talking and interacting with Carly than you do Doug. With zombies trying to pound the door down behind me, I went with the person/character I had gotten more attached to.

*******Spoiler******* In the span of time you've got both Doug and Carly in your group, she saves you outside the store, talks to you about keeping your secret AND is with you during a pivotal choice in the game about what showing mercy is in this zombie filled world.  *******end spoiler*******

With so much time spent with Carly and so little with Doug, the choice felt natural. Although, that could be what the writers were going for. When you're put in a situation of deciding between who lives and dies, do you work off instinct under pressure or are you able to carefully analyze things in a matter of seconds?

I chose Carly...cause she had the gun. And seriously...claiming Carly an idiot for not knowing that the radio requires a plugin or batteries....when You as the main character pick it up to help, and simply press the power button and turn volume dial???? Who's the bigger idiot? I mean did he not take shop in prison? LOL

(SPOILER ALERT) I chose to save Carley.  This was an easy choice to make.  Not because she was a female and I wanted to be a knight in shining armour but because the game is scripted and set up for you to bond with her.  If you think about it when you take control of Lee your closer in distance to Carly than Doug so the game sets you up to engage her first which is similar to the end sequence when you engage Glen first.

You would want to thank Carly for saving your life.  The sacrifice she makes, braking away from group and place of safety much in the way Glen did in the tv series is quite heroic.  Because of her actions Lee is able to get inside the pharmacy.  She saves you again by shooting the walker that you were struggling with after saving clementine.   She saved you 2 times in under 5 minutes.  During the whole argument where the two groups debate the risk Carly made in shooting the walkers and saving your group Doug is no where to be seen and is the only person that stays quiet when the rest of the group have an opinion.  Larry wants you to leave, Lilly thinks Carly should of left you to the walkers and Glen agrees with Carly that you needed help.  Following these events Lee has more to talk to carly about and becomes more interested in her background.  He will ask her how she is doing as the relationship develops.  The game then tasks you with setting up the radio for Carly not because she is stupid this is merely done to set up the conversation tree that follows where you show concern and console her.

When you go into the office a cut seen triggers of another conversation with Lee and Carly where she again shows her alliance by keeping your secret.  When Glen gets in trouble she is the one that goes with you to save Glen.  During the motel sequence the game shows how your brains and leadership with her gun skills makes for an effective partnership.

I chose her over Doug because I spent more time with her so i cared more about her.  More conversation opportunities equals richer characterisation making her seem more real.  Lee even had more trust in her than he did with doug.  He holds back from telling doug what he knows during his short sequence with doug and even seems upset with him when he comments on the walker that we know is Lee's brother and again when he is hurrying Lee during what we, the players know is an emotional moment for Lee.

If the decission was between saving Kenny and saving Carly I would have saved Kenny for the same reason, the relationship being better.  I would not have considered what skill could benefit me most.  I don't think you do in the real world.  You would choose your closest friends or family.  With regards to the Carly vs Doug debate around their usefulness in an apocalypse even Kenny regards Carly as an asset to the group suggesting she gets rest because she is a good shot and he wants to keep it that way.  At this point in the story Kenny is in a leadership role and acknowledges her value, yet he says nothing to Doug, nor does he engage with him.  Doug is asigned as a look out because he has no recognisable skills when Kenny is delegating responsibilities.

In conclusion Carly over Doug because the game is steered towards Lee having a better relationship with Carly through the set pieces etc and saving Carly has the additional bonus of keeping the only person in the group with a gun alive.  Though I am sure doug will have some advantages to being in the group for those who kept him alive for the next episode, I personally didn't feel any connection to him and I definately didn't feel as upset about him dying as I did when I couldn't save Sean.
